LX5 why is everybody complaining

I believe that optical quality will be worse than the LX3. I'll have to wait and see.

A wild guess tells me they've gone the now popular in-camera/raw converter distortion correction route, ie crazy barrel distortion "fixed" via software. I would have preferred shorter zoom (24/28-50), smaller lens. I have hardly ever used anything above 35mm on my S90 or G9.

I'm not complaining though... :)

The LX3 does that now, the native terrible barrel distortion is fixed in-camera in the jpegs and in some raw converters (some do, some don't). I expect the same software corrections to happen with the LX5.

This is a Professional P&S camera, so I suspect it will be top notch. The LX3 was a hard act to follow, but I believe Panasonic has scored again. I want one, like yesterday!

Although "pro", it's still a P&S - and as far as one can tell from other current Pana cameras the biggest drawback will be the Jpeg engine. I sold the LX3 after I got tired of having to RAW develop every single picture to get decent "greens" and "healthy skin colours".

Sensor size is the same, so we have the benefit of at least two years of sensor technology evolution. LX5 images will have higher IQ than LX3 images. Panasonic knows it's LX-series audience - they won't introduce a successor to the LX3 that doesn't make better images than its predecessor.

Size differences are pretty huge (or, I should say the NEX lens is pretty huge, at least in comparison). LX5 vs. NEX is a question of CLASS of camera, not specific models.
they were way out front a couple years ago in super zooms, m4/3rds rollout and the class leading lx3, but now they are starting to be overtaken. I would have like to see them jump ahead again, at least ion one or two places.

The Sony NEX is looking more attractive, put a pancake on her and get close to lx3/lx5 handling with superior output.... and more lens options (soon)

I refuse to wed myself to any of these vendors. I'm just having fun taking pictures,
and watching the technology develop.

...........those who already have the LX3 and simply can't stand to know an improved version is about to be released so they will attempt to reduce its worth without knowing it's real capabilities.
This sounds nice and simple, but you have a pretty low opinion of LX3 owners if you believe that. It could just as easily be pointed out how naive it is to believe manufacturers' press releases and specs for a new model...how many "miracle" cameras have we seen announced, that weren't?

If you've watched the forum for a while, you know that if you ask for suggestions for the "LX4", you'll get a host of widely different demands...more zoom, no zoom, bigger aperture, full HD movie, optical viewfinder, electronic viewfinder, no viewfinder, smaller, larger, 4/3 sensor, Fuji sensor, leafy lens cap, real lens cap, AA batteries, a host of personal favorite settings like timer mode that sticks...just about every possible option but floppy disk storage.

I thnk many of the really disappointed ones just didn't get their personal wish item. The really excited ones, on the other hand, either got their personal item, or else put off buying an LX3 for 2 years on the speculation that the next model was coming, and have wasted 2 years waiting, so they have to justify it by being thrilled it's finally arrived (after all, they've missed all that time they could have owned and used a great camera).

The 'neutral' ones probably mostly already own an LX3, and see this as a minor upgrade and no big deal. That may seem like a complaint to someone who's really excited about the LX5, but it's not. Most of us who bought the LX3 didn't buy it so we'd have the latest and greatest, we bought it because it was (and remains) a great camera.

Panny are not averse to putting a poorer quality lens on the next model camera, - witness the G1-G2 'upgrade' and this was noted in the review on this site. Fuji put out the HS10 superzoom which has the worst image quality I have seen for a long time.

The image quality of the FZ100 is very suspect and I am under whelmed by the LX5 pics, - they have had two whole years to improve it and I have not seen the 'wow' factor yet, maybe my palate has been jaded by knock pics for M4/3.

Why do you think that nex system is an attractive option for lx users?
sure,.. for many lx users
I find these "evil" cameras are not so attractive in terms of price and image quality.

Well, they cost the double respect a LX offering a image quality not so dramatically better.
there probably won't be that much of a price difference between the lx5 and a Sony NEX The Sony NEX3 is for sale here at BestBuy for 699.00 Canadian with the zoom lens, that's not too high.

I could see myself packing around a NEX with a prime lens on it... and occasional a zoom in another coat pocket

Of coarse I understand that everyone is different

I'm not saying the lx5 is bad either, in fact I still might buy one, but because it's not much of a leap ahead over the lx3 other options are catching up to it.
You're right!

I didn't consider that, moreover in the first months, the lx5 will have a price comparable to m4/3 cameras!

The LX5 images we have seen so far are straight out of camera jpgs. They all use way too much noise reduction and sharpening. But as a Lumix G1 owner I have full confidence in Panasonic that the image quality obtainable from the LX5 RAW files will be very good.

Thanks for pointing this out! I was thinking from something I read that it was about double those amounts. And the list your link shows for $128 EVF are with very reputable companies. I use BHphoto and Adorama all the time.

Two unknowns:
will the image quality match or exceed the LX3?
Yes, it probably will. And even if it doesn't measure up 100% the added utility of having a larger zoom range and HD video will be very compelling for some potential buyers. Panasonic has essentially addressed the whining over the LX3. They even made the grip more substantial.
will current LX3 users upgrade to the new model?
Most probably won't. This isn't a major upgrade. It's a lot like the Canon G10 and G11. People who need to have the latest camera will buy them. And people who are looking for this sort of camera and don't already own a LX3 will buy them. But very few LX3 owners will ditch their LX3 to have the improved feature set (unless they belong to that first group).

no increase in sensor size

mediocre evf attachment

no improvement in video - avchd isn´t better than mpeg, it´s just smaller file

I do like the white but I think I´ll go for the nex 3 instead for the sweep panorama
