S90 noise in low light

the picture on flickr is not comparable to the S90 pic, you have no shadow detail at all and if you look at the sky it is full of noise...., if you use the shadows/highlight sliders to darken a bit the shadows it will hide the noise at the expense of some detail, and it is better to avoid lighting up the shadows which of course brings out the noise.
Hello,

I've just bought S90 and shot first pictures (jpegs) . What surprises me, is the noise level at ISO 200 in low light. It seems my old Fuji S5800 behaved better in similar conditions and set to ISO 400 ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/wojt3k/3784028809/in/photostream/ ). Is it normal, or should I tweak some settings?

Nope, it wasn't even cropped.
Ah right, i can see that now.

I can also see noise in your Flickr shot, but as pointed out, its darker and so this hides the noise a bit.

All compacts are noisy, even at ISO100. Its finding the right balence and the right PP to hide it IME.

I know its not for everyone but shooting Raw might help with shots like these, again, IME.

Could you suggest RAW processing software?

I would not call this noise - take the sky for example. I would call this pixel shape deformation after inadequate and immature in-camera noise removal resulting in rice-like, rectangular pixel areas, easily confused with chroma noise

Solution ? Oh yes - adequate and just-enough noise removal from raw files in PP, with a tool that does not leave behind rice-like, rectangular pixel areas.

Have you tried DPP that came with the S90?

The only program i use is LR3 and thats not cheap, but well worth it IME.

Perhaps a little noise, but I personally rather like the photo especially considering it came from a $350 camera. I will take the detail over a little noise any day. :-)

Actually it is a €310 camera :)
Thank you all for your remarks and advice.

happy shooting,

Sweet photo!
Very Nice!
Thanks. This is the first compact that ive felt comfortable shooting at night.

Its in no way perfect and it does sometimes take a bit of PP to clear it up but i find the noise is pretty acceptable and prefer it to be there so i can choose how much NR to apply and how much sharpness im willing to sacrifice. Thats why i dont shoot JPG any more.

Its always nice to get back to my 40D though.
