Gosh, FZ100 would be such a good camera, if they only kept it at 10 MP.

A 100% crop of the official sample image at Panasonic website. Green arrows point to areas showing complete loss of fine detail due to smudging by Venus engine, triggered by too many too small pixels that are no longer capable of providing pixel-per-pixel resolution. This is irrecoverable. Downsampling will not help.
WHO IN HELL NEEDS 14 MEGAPIXELS ON FZ100??? WAKE UP!!!

Does it have RAW or not?

Actually, when you think of the reach and starting at 25mm its very impressive, but I think RAW should be included. 11FPS? at full res. and 60fps at 3.5mp, hmm, this seems to be very impressive.

I'd be happy with that 100% crop
What is the problem?
This is not a DSLR and it was never intended to be.
Does this really need to be pointed out?
Apples with apples.

While I agree with you that FZ100 is not a DSLR and that we should not expect too much, the sample pics are worse in detail than comparable bird pics taken with a FZ50. It would have been nice if that image quality would have been matched in this brand-new camera. Nonetheless, I think for a final verdict we will have to wait for the reviews.

That's very disappointing. Not only is there smearing but it's slightly out of focus as well. Close up and in good light, the feather detail I've seen in pics from both the FZ50 and FZ35 can be impressive.

There is detail about as much you would get from a 5mp sensor ;-)

Honestly a 15mp sensor giving 14mp effective images on a small sensor was never likely to be anything bar a NR over processed sharpening feast. And that's what you get!

Still it has raw so you can fight the noise a bit yourself.

Really it's pointless going above 10mp for sensors this size and it's open to debate if you even need that. Most would be happy with 6-8mp but we know it's all about numbers on a box.

Wonder if ISO 6400 is any good? lol ;-)

While I am probably not as experienced as some of you guys, can we really tell much from these images? Surely it will take more than 3 pictures to assess relative image quality.

This is a crop from a shot of a Greylag Goose taken from about 15 feet away with the FZ50. Maybe not up to DSLR standards, but this is the level of IQ I'm looking for.

EFL: 489mm, 1/400s, f/3.6, ISO 100

Exactly! On your shot, every pixel on the goose's head carries resolution!

I do not understand why the 15MP. Is the MP decided at the outset of designing or applied later after research tests?

10MP would have been a killer with the new engine.

Image quality is secondary. It's for the birds. 99% of these photos will be displayed on the internet or on 4x6 prints. Who cares about IQ?

What is the 35mm equiv focal distance of 5mp EZ with the fz100?

It's a nice crop for sure, is it a 100% crop?

It's for wildlife as well as for the birds. It's for the classic superzoomers. The ones who usually end up with a DSLR for that better IQ, easier tracking, and superior low-light capability.

It is SOLELY a marketing and PR thing.

It is about Head of Marketing and Head of PR Department shouting orders at poor Panasonic engineers: Give us 14 MP! Anything below 14 MP does not sell! Canon has 12 MP so we must have 14 MP!

This is Matshushita! Now go and bend the laws of physics, if necessary!
