Pentax announces new SLR?

I've had a quick look, it does look like a leak about a D-SLR from Pentax to be announced at PMA, APS sized sensor and a low price. I'll try to turn it into a news article which can make some sense.
Bablefish makes a mess out of it, but it looks as though Pentax has
announced a new SLR with an APS sized sensor. I know that some of
you will say who cares, but for those of us with Pentax lenses, it
is a great announcement.

Hmm...I'll have to take your word for it - since I can't see a
recognizable word in that text other than 'aps'...

Misha,

you can paste the URL in http://babelfish.altavista.com/ in the URL box, and you will get it translated to english (or other language)... But the text produced by the automated translator is not photography-term-aware and the sentences do not always make sense

Yep.. it's true..

I subscribe to the PDML (Pentax Discussion Mailing List) and it's been translated by the guy on our list who noted it:

"PENTAX ENTER INTO DSLR MARKET

Pentax is going to enter into DSLR market next spring. At the same time,
they will cut (optimise) the number of current film based SLR product lines
(currently 6 basic lines) to less than half. Number of models of P&S, MF
will be also optimised to half. By doing this, Pentax intend to shift their
emphasis to digital cameras, raise their profile in the digital camera
market which is making a healthy growth.

At present, DSLRs have been marketed by Nikon, Canon and Kyocera, and
Fuji/Kodak who utilize Nikon bodies. In next spring, Olympus is going to
enter the market with their own standard, and it is obvious that the
competition becomes fierce.

Pentax is now making the final preparation with the adoption of APS size
sensor, and intend to limit the price points to $2,000 level (editor's note:
This could be interpreted anywhere between $2,000 and $3,000). Although
DSLRs with larger sensor could render better details and gradation, the body
size become larger and the price would be far more expensive at $7,000.

By adopting the APS size sensor, Pentax can limit the price within the
affordable level and pursue the compactness of the body size.
At the same time, Pentax will release a few (more than one) SLR lenses in
the wide angle range. Market share of Pentax last year was P&S 25%, SLR 12%
and MF 40%. By optimising the number of models of film camera, Pentax will
increase the sales per model, hence increase the profitability as well.

Exciting news for all us Pentax (and previous Pentax - I just sold my LX because I thought I'd never see this day... I still have lenses though) :)
owners.

Cheers,
Dave

My wife took a look at the article and translated it for me. It says that as early as next spring Pentax will come out with a DSLR with an APS sized sensor. They plan to cut back film camera production by 50% and concentrate on the digital market. To keep the cost of the camera down and to keep the body small, they decided to go with the 24x16mm sized sensor. They will also concentrate on a new line of wide angle lenses to go with the camera. The new camera will sell for about 200,00 Yen, or about $1,700 dollars US. No specifics about pixel count, etc. TJ
sighhhh......

But didn't Pentax promise a full-frame camera a year or so ago, but never delivered?

Sort of. They had (by all accounts) a full frame dslr ready to go into production, but they decided that it wasn't price competitive and pulled the plug. I bet Contax wishes they did that now! The Pentax and the Contax were rumored to use the same chip, Pentax decided that they weren't going to sell enough $7000 to make it worth their while, but at the time of the plug-pulling, they did also say that they were continuing to persue less expensive digital SLR options. I would like to officially start the Foveon speculation now (PLEASE PENTAX!).

I think that's a good thing to speculate on : ))

The Foveon sensor is just a bit smaller than APS. 20.7mm
x 13.8mm according to their spec sheet. Still, that's close
enough, right?

Do not mean to subtract from Pentax finally getting a DSLR out, but what I really want is a digital insert for the 645!!!

I love my Pentax lenses and it seems like they are one of the big medium format suppliers lacking any support for digital in the line.

Is there anyone from Pentax out there???

According to the translation, the special w/a lenses will be designed to fit the sensor size, and the rest of the lenses will be regular Pentax film SLR mount?

If this is true, then there is a ton of cheap glass out there for the new camera when and if it arrives.

Yipppeeeeee

My wife has a Pentax SLR and two autofocus lenses

From Luminous Landscape:

"Good news for Pentax 645 owners (me included). A reader has reported that he visited Photokina yesterday and saw the first digital back for the Pentax 645. It is made by NPC in cooperation with Mosaic Imaging. The first generation model has the electronics off to the side, looking similar to a Polaroid back for the 645. They are apparently working on getting the electronics into the film insert cavity, so the second generation will be a lot more compact. Also, he will use a larger 645 chip as they become available."

Currently, the only APS sized sesnor I'm aware of is the Sony sensor being used by Nikon in the D100. I wonder if it will be the same sensor or possible a second generation version of the same. If so, I would imagine that the camera, by that time, might be able to create a lower price point for the consumer DSLR market. Say $1500!! Just speculation......

Who was making that full frame sensor for them? Perhaps they're using that same company.

I expect Kodak is already sending to perspective buyers the specifications of the sensor they will introduce with the so called Olydak system
