"PENTAX ENTER INTO DSLR MARKET
Pentax is going to enter into DSLR market next spring. At the same
time,
they will cut (optimise) the number of current film based SLR
product lines
(currently 6 basic lines) to less than half. Number of models of
P&S, MF
will be also optimised to half. By doing this, Pentax intend to
shift their
emphasis to digital cameras, raise their profile in the digital camera
market which is making a healthy growth.
At present, DSLRs have been marketed by Nikon, Canon and Kyocera, and
Fuji/Kodak who utilize Nikon bodies. In next spring, Olympus is
going to
enter the market with their own standard, and it is obvious that the
competition becomes fierce.
Pentax is now making the final preparation with the adoption of APS
size
sensor, and intend to limit the price points to $2,000 level
(editor's note:
This could be interpreted anywhere between $2,000 and $3,000).
Although
DSLRs with larger sensor could render better details and gradation,
the body
size become larger and the price would be far more expensive at
$7,000.
By adopting the APS size sensor, Pentax can limit the price within the
affordable level and pursue the compactness of the body size.
At the same time, Pentax will release a few (more than one) SLR
lenses in
the wide angle range. Market share of Pentax last year was P&S
25%, SLR 12%
and MF 40%. By optimising the number of models of film camera,
Pentax will
increase the sales per model, hence increase the profitability as
well.
Exciting news for all us Pentax (and previous Pentax - I just sold
my LX because I thought I'd never see this day... I still have
lenses though)
owners.
Cheers,
Dave
I've had a quick look, it does look like a leak about a D-SLR from
Pentax to be announced at PMA, APS sized sensor and a low price.
I'll try to turn it into a news article which can make some sense.
