I took the plunge and ordered an a850. I have a Leica 50mm lens I would like to use so could someone recommend an adapter?

I may be wrong but I think your best option is the Leitax adaptor which is a actually change of the mount.
Which 50mm do you have? I shoot with a 50/2.0 and find it has some really nice qualities to it.

mine is the same lens. With this adapter do you remove the rear mount of the lens then attach the adapter to the lens?

I have leitax adapters for zeiss contax but I bought my leica adapters on ebay. The ebay adapters work great on my 35-70 f4 and 80-200 f4 Kyocera Leica lenses. The only issue is that the rom on the 35-70 has a flat cable that goes across where the flange should be flush to the lens. It is a little raised but I haven't seen any adverse impact. At come point I'll have that part of the flange milled to allow it to clear the cable. The 80-200 has no rom.
I beleive that aside from the kyocera lenses most leica lenses with rom do not have the cable running across the back of the lens and down the outside of the inner barrel but rather down the inside of the barrel where it is not an issue.
Comparing the leitax contax adapters to the leica bought on ebay the indentation for a rom chip is narower and more exactly placed on the leica ebay adapters than on the leitax zeiss.
Yes, you do have to remove the leica flange and replace it with the adapter whether from Leitax or from the ebay vendor. BTW not all the leica adapters on ebay are the same and some are much more difficult to work with. Here is a link for the type I used. It has a milled ridge inside the flange on which to fit a rom chip and it lines up perfectly with the sony camera flange:
