traveling to Rome

He he, we still don't have Israeli security levels in Europe:-)

I doubt you will be forced to leave your camera behind anywhere (unless you plan to drink coffee with the Pope)

You may not be allowed to take pictures in some places like churces or museums (or at least the use of flash may be prohibited) - but in general every tourist runs around with a camera in Rome.

It's been a few years since I've visited Rome but I go to Italy every year since my wife is from Naples and I have never heard of any such restrictions in Rome or anywhere else.

Have a nice trip - it's a beautiful city.

No problem with photos in Rome.
May be in some museums or churchs you can't use flash light.
But i'm sure you'll take beautifull pictures!
Ciao

Hi,

I will be traveling to Rome this weekend and wanted to make sure that SLR's and camera backpacks are allowed in all the major tourist attractions. I would not want to check them in. Can anyone confirm this?
Cameras are mostly accepted but not backpacks in many museums. The risk for having to check a backpack increases with size. Small shoulder packs are generally fine.

It's about time we started to take photography seriously and treat it as a hobby.- Elliott Erwitt

when I was there five years ago. They had to be checked.

No photo restrictions ( except Sistine Chapel ) in Vatican.

Villa Borghese Museum prohibited all photography - so I
didn't go there.

When going to a museum I generally take just a camera
and one lens and enough CF cards in my pocket so I don't
have to check anything.

Rome is a terrific city. Have fun,

I was just in Rome (and other places in Italy) in early April.

There are several venues where backpacks are not allowed. Cameras are generally accepted, but photos are prohibited in many places, mostly churches.

I took a shoulder bag instead of my backpack. I took it to be less obvious for theft reasons. I was very glad I did as it was allowed in almost all of the places where backpacks were not. I had the Thinktank Urban Disguise 40.

The only place where even that was not allowed was the Vatican. My SLR was allowed, however, but I had to leave my bag (on the tour bus in my case).

Photos were allowed in the Vatican with the exception of the Sistine Chapel. They were very strict about photos there as they have sold the rights to photographs of it to a company that contributed greatly to the very expensive restoration project that was performed a few years ago. Photos were allowed in St. Peters though.

For what it's worth, I dragged around a telephoto lens (70-300) with me throughout Italy and almost never used it. I also had a borrowed a wide angle lens (12-24) from a friend and used it a lot.

Enjoy your trip. There is no shortage of photo ops in Rome.

I went to Croatia, Rome and Paris last year with a 17-35, 50 1.4 and 70-300. When I got home I looked at my EXIF data and more than 90% of my photos were taken at 35mm or wider.

I'm guessing that if you were to only take the WA zoom you could more than get by.

That's my $.02

make sure you have wide & fast lens as most Churches do not allow flash inside, your 16-35 and 50 1.4 are fine, I had no problem with my backpack in Churches and Vatican Museum when I was there in May.

pay extra caution in crowded places such as in metro where pickpockets are active

Here are some pictures I took

enjoy your trip and take lots of pictures
