As some will be aware I recently made the decision to move to Nikon. The decision was based around my perceived inconsistent AF performance of the K7.

The Nikon kit is slowly coming together, a D300, 70-200 f2.8 VR I, 1.4x TC and a 50/1.8 are in the bag. A 300/4 and a battery grip are coming.

Today was the first chance to use the gear in anger. I used the D300, 70-200 and the TC.

I won't go into comparing the two cameras, I think I'll just post some pix.

I am pretty happy....

First off - a few that I could never get with the K7 + 100-300/ combo.

1. panning from L to R bike at about 100+ MPH D300 + 70-200

2. Bike going away from me D300 70-200 + 1.4x TC

A few D300 + 70-200

A few D300 + 70-200 + 1.4x TC

Thanks all the Nikon talk on a Pentax forum. It's a great service that you are doing for the folks that are unable to figure out how to navigate to other forums and get their own information.

Gordon, "use the gear in anger"?

Looks nice Gordon. This is really a situation where Nikon excels. Enjoy your toys :)

My daughter-in-law has the D300s, 70-200 2.8 VRII, 50mm 1.8, some VR kit lens, and a D60 with another kit lens for a backup. I've used the D300s, impressive. It's fast, both shot to shot and focus. It will also focus in lighting conditions that makes my K200 hunt. High ISO shots are very good, like the K-X, much better than the K200.

Also, it is big and heavy and expensive. The D300s and 70-200 combo are a quick pain in the neck. The focus light is some what of a mixed bag. It works well with small lenses like the 50mm, but even with the VR kit lens some light spills on the side of the lens, and on the 70-200 it nicely illuminates the outside of the lens hood. Does the K-7 suffer the same problem?

Excellent shots.

I believe using Pentax forces one to hone his skill and have no doubt that right tools will only enhance it.

To be frank I've seen people capture similar shots with a P&S superzoom, so I'm still at a loss why you could not manage with the Pentax.

I'm glad you're happy with your new kit, although I don't think the kit was the problem, but your attitude to it. If you keep fighting your kit you won't ever be happy. For now you're happy with the Nikon stuff and that's letting you take shots you did not before.

It makes me wonder why people, you and me included, spend fooling money on DSLR at all. :)

I feel sorry for you having gone to Nikon.

But come on.. A K-7 should be able to take this type of shots with two fingers up its nose. Inconsistent? Maybe, but not in this type of shot, where there's enough light for tracking AF. This is an easy subject IMHO.

Pretty much the definition of trolling - especially after your last post turned into yet another brand flame war. No reason this should be in the Pentax forum other than a need for attention.

"The biggest mouths take the fewest photos."

Absolutely spot on. Since the zoo shooter moved on we've had to endure this tripe on a regular basis. It is time that the moderators nip this garbage in the bud. Or perhaps there should be a collective effort to post Pentax photos in the Nikon forum and return the favor.

If you guys were actually following the forum instead of trying to find something to pick sh#t out of you would realise that I was asked by quite a number of members here to post up some pix.

If it weren't such a ridiculous observation, I would be happy to go side by side with anyone with a K7 and a comparative 70-200 in Pentax mount and the D300 in this style of shooting. After owning and using the K7 for over 16,000 shots I can assure you I knew the D300 would cr@p all over the K7 for motorsport after the first 5 frames.

I am sorry to say that this forum is no longer the place it was when I joined back in the days of the istD and Ds. It is largely frequented by narrow minded keyboard jocks who appear to know no more about photography than what it is to walk on the moon - in other words FA!

I won't be bothering you guys here any longer. For my dear friends here that really are interested please don't hesitate to drop me an email.

some Pentax shooters asked to see his photos after the switch - and at least one requested he post them here.

Stephen, I'm sorry - you're not getting shots like that with a superzoom. I'm guessing you don't shoot sports at all do you? I do - although not this sport. I'll let Gordon confirm - but I'll guess he's seeing the biggest improvement in shooting the curves.
