I was speaking to a professional photographer who works in the media this afternoon. He told me that Nikon had made the next version of the D90 and had been trialling in and had met with severe problems resulting in the new camera being a very poor cousin to the original.

This guy works for the same organisation as I but I have no idea how true his statement was...

I remember reading (on Nikon Rumors, but I can't find it now) rumors on the D90 replacement. There was full hd video, I believe more autofocus points, it was lighter, 5 FPS continuous shooting and then the one thing that really stood out was the fact that it didn't include an AF motor for non-G lenses.

Which is pretty terrible if you ask me.

I guess we will find out soon, but I will have no gripes keeping my vanilla D90 and not upgrading if that is the case.

I think you mean "non-AF-S" lenses.

The "G" just means the lens has no aperture ring, and has nothing to do with whether there is a focus motor.

A photograph is more than a bunch of pixels

I guess it's fairly clear that if Nikon is having problems with their new camera they won't want to release it for a while. I was hoping this guy was about to say that the new version shot the D90 out of the sky.

I don't think this guy had any axe to grind. He owns a lot of Nikon cameras and probably has connections at Nikon. He wasn't just gossiping with me.
Well, he was just gossiping with you. What reliability is there to his gossiping?
What company do you two work for? What was his source of gossip?

I have the D-90 and really do not have any gripes with it. It's a great camera. But if I decide to upgrade, it would not be another version of the D-90, which would have to have pretty much the same features as the 300s to be considered an upgrade of a a D-90, so I don't think Nikon will make that happen. I have all the lenses I need so what I would do, is either keep the D-90 as back-up and buy a 300s body or sell the D-90 and buy the 300s or maybe the next step up from the 300s, the D-700 with full frame. Beyond the D-700, you get into some serious bucks.

So in all reality, I can live with the D-90, the 300s is only a baby step up and cost twice as much. The D-700 body is about another grand over the D-300 body but far superior than the D-90 or D-300s. The D-700 would be my next upgrade.

Hmm.

A/ that's true. But surely men don't 'gossip'!
B/ I have no idea but he seemed honest and convincing
C/ I'd rather not say.
D/ someone he knows at Nikon.

I realise this is all rather conjectural...

The D90 is hard to replace because it wouldn't make sense to dig into the D300/D300s market by having more pixels or a newer sensor. The D300s was released July 2009 with very minor upgrades from the D300. I've heard rumours of a D3500 coming out which kind of makes sense since Canon has covered the entry level market with their Rebel series--Nikon only has the D3000 and D5000 in this category so far.

I picked the D5000 over the D90 because it's newer and I can skip the D90 replacement and get the D300s (or whatever replaces it in 2 years) if I decide to upgrade.

KO.
Fair enough, thanks Paul.

Think Marti58 was citing 'non-disclosure agreement' concept, but this would fall far outside of any such agreement . . .
Nobody will have the liberty to say anything NDA will prevent people in the know from doing so.

All my Post Processing is done with Capture NX2
Good for you!
