Hi All,

I have decided [because of this great site and the great people in the forums!] to buy th S602.

Besides largr memory what do I have to have ?
Is a UV filter a must? [I live in a sunny country]

Does it really protect your lens from all dust, dirt etc..?

Do the Ultraviolet rays of the sun distort the pics ?

Thanks for the help,
Michael

Yeah you should get one. You need to buy a 55-55mm "tube" to attach the filter to the camera. The reason it's a good idea besides filtering out the UV, is the S602 lens moves in and out when you turn it on/off. So this could pull dust into the lens when it extends. The tube and filter basically seal the camera so this won't happen. There have also been threads of people that dropped or bumbed the extended lens on something and it damaged it making the camera impossible to use, but have the tube and filter on prevents this.

I find a 1B Skylight is a bit better all-the-time filter for the 602. I think it helps alleviate the orange tint in program mode and seems to enhance the contrast based passive AF system.

The required tube also helps protect the lens. Either a 55--> 55mm or a 55--> 52mm tube will work fine. The extended portion of the 602's lens is much smaller in diameter and gets very close to the filter, so neither filter size (55 or 52mm) obstructs anything.

Consider buying the telephoto lens or wide angle lens to get the 55--> 55mm tube for filter use. Essentially, you'll get a $15 discount since a 55--> 55mm tube is included and you won't have to buy one separately.

So the tube fits screws on the outer housing of the "lens", the part that doesn't extend? and the tube essentially provides a sealed "tunnel" for the lens to live in?

Is this tube a Fuji only product or can it be found elsewhere? Is there a particular length tube I should look for, or are they made specifically for the 602. Also, what would be the better size to go with 55-55 or 55-52?
Thanks a bunch

I am a novice, and want to know

if for a stepping tube 55-> 52, do I need a UV filter 52 ? or 55mm ?

thanks

any good deal?

Correct.

You can get an original Fuji tube, but they are not available separately in the US, I believe. They do come with the teleconverter or wide angle converter Fuji makes. Kenko makes essentially the same tube for about 1/3 the price. Both the Fuji and the Kenko are 55-55mm.
specifically for the 602. Also, what would be the better size to go
with 55-55 or 55-52?
I would prefer the straight 55-55; unless you intend to buy 52mm thread accessories, like the Raynox teleconverter many people seem to have. I believe Raynox makes such a 55-52 tube, and probably Kenko as well.
Thanks a bunch

The camera body requires a 55mm thread to attach the tube to the camera.

So if you have a 55mm -> 52mm tube your accessories would have to be 52mm.

Congratulations and welcome to the club.
(Although I have a slightly older 6900, I believe I have a right to say that.)

It's cheap insurance to have an adapter tube and fliter protecting the most fragile part of the camera: the extending lens barrel. Does it have to be a UV? Not really, but it's the most neutral type.

If you live in a sunny country, consider buying a good polarizer. It can enhance colors and contrast and take away reflections from non-metallic surfaces (water, glass, ...). On the other hand, it takes away 1-1.5 stops of light, but that may actually be a good thing if the sun is usually very bright where you live.
Does it really protect your lens from all dust, dirt etc..?
Maybe not 100%, but definitely more than having nothing on it at all.

I have to add that I took my 6900 on a jeep safari on Crete this summer and didn't have the tube and filter at that time. The jeep was a convertible, so we were literally covered in dust. We did protect the camera well and didn't leave it exposed, but even inside the bag it got covered with dust. I blew it off each time before extending the lens but I don't think that gets rid of it all. Still, I had no problem afterwards and it's working fine today, but I would have kicked myself if it were damaged. I do feel a lot better now with the tube and filter on. I've read too many horror stories here.
Do the Ultraviolet rays of the sun distort the pics ?
It causes a haze on warm, sunny and humid days. The UV filter should be able to "cut through" some of it. The polarizer should help here too. I sometimes have both (UV and Pol.) on the tube because I don't want to take off the UV and open it up.
Thanks for the help,
Michael

The 55-55 looks nicer than the 55-52. What's the difference? Apart
from the obvious size...

Hi, Michael,
I consider the tube and filter necessary "insurance". Here's what
the 55-52 looks like on the camera.

I live in the uk can any one tell me how much these will cost and
where to get them from?
You can get the tube for my S602 from http://www.internetcamerasdirect.co.uk for £27 and the a 55mm UV filter is around £13 pounds at Jessops.

Shagen,

Apart from the size. (IMHO) To the casual observer, the 55-55 looks like part of the camera, therefore its a big camera, therefore this cameraman is serious; the 55-52 looks like an add-on and the the camera looks smaller, therefore this cameraman is an amateur (which I am). The main reason I use the 55-52 is that it fits in my Olympus D600L case.

Where can you get this (same as pictured) in the US? Could some one provide me with a link(s). Thanks!

I've got the 55 and the 52, I liked the black better then the silver so I painted the 52. It turned out great.

Thanks for passing on that info, I appreciate it. It sounds like a good deal to me.
Great people to deal with, You might consider the package deal.
adapter tube, uv filter, and cap. for around $27. Or just the tube
for around $14.
