smart looking man

Keith, nice article on Vaughn. He's got my vote; seriously I hope that he wins.

Forget about how smart looking he is. Just look at what's coming NEX

ananda i think vaughns nex shots are ok but not great i know he wants to travel

small and light weight . i thought the fuji hs10 was going to be my next camera
but fuji will not get my money i am going to miss this model out

i realy do like the nex size but for me i am not seeing great pictures just yet
and i actually think the samsung ex1 is a better camera and i am thinking

i would like that model more than the nex...regards bassy

You correct, Keith-

The NEX images thus far have not been knock-out images. I put my money on the EX-1/TL-500, and I am pleased thus far. Here is a sample photo.

Bassy, I got an EX1 last month at Currys...for some unknown reason they were selling them in there stores for £249.99...at that price I couldn't resist...however it was really difficult to find shops with them in stock, some owners here got tem cheaper if they found the last one as a demo model.

Nicely built, VG quality lens and yes... an f1.8 lens makes a world of difference in low light. LCD screen is very good, I do find the finish though is a bit 'lightweight'. The little stubby indents on the base have their paint worn off already, I have found it easy to scratch the back too when rotating the screen quickly at an angle, and this has removed the paint on the screen edge that touch's.

I don't find the ergonomics great. The interface is a bit confusing, not intuative. For instance I simply could not work out how to turn on manual focus...it was always displayed as a greyed out option...solution, go into another menu and turn off face detection! The menu's aren't as well thought out as Kodaks, but then it has more features. Lens is great!! CA is minimal, I have hardly seen any in shots taken while playing around. I just haven't had the time lately to go out and take any.

Sure it lacks the higher res video modes, but it's a decent STILLS camera. The only problem now is I like the z950 and z915, and have carried them about quite a bit. How nice it would be if they (Kodak) put this 'Schneider' lens and sensor in a z950 body AND added a flash socket or hotshoe, and improved the drive by wire manual focussing.

I too have looked at the Sony NEX cameras, and simply can't make my mind up over them. I have a Sigma DP1 and even though for a premium compact SEVERELY lacking in most departments, it's JUST OK, giving reasonable results. However when I went to Rome I used the z915 more, the flexibility of the zoom range simply made it more convenient. I also am starting to think when I could live with a 41mm DP2 more. Given the experience with the two Z9xx's the 'semi' wide angle setting is more useful than I give it credit.

Strange...when I had just 35mm lens as a wide angle...I always wanted a 28mm....then came the 24mm P880, and now....back to 35mm....

Phil-

I agree with your evaluation of the EX-1/TL-500. It has a great lens and excellent image quality, but it is a confusing camera to deal with on a daily basis. I like my EX-1 but, also like you, Phil, I find myself quite happy using the Z-915 and Z-950 a lot more often.

Hi Bassy,

I read your response and the others with interest. Because that viewpoint didn't occur to me. With a camera like the NEX, you have a fast CPU in the camera so it can write RAW+JPEG quickly, you have interchangeable lenses and you have a relatively large sensor - APSC or Micro Four Thirds

I don't see how one can assess the camera anymore - for a non removable lens camera on a budget, the camera has limitations that say is 80% of the equation in getting a photo. With an increased cost camera with manual, P A S M and interchangeable lenses, the camera is now potentially 20% of the equation.

However, the equation may be 20% human and 80% camera in IQ until the human figures out that he/she is letting the side down. With patience, experience, skill and persistence, the human can achieve the reverse - 80% human and 20% camera in determining the IQ of the photo. Of course, I am speaking of typical humans.

Vaughan's and the NEX's photo Image Quality cannot be established by looking at his current shots. He is shooting shots that he would not do on the P880. He is shooting against the light, he is shooting in-camera HDR - those things he NEVER did with his P880 / C875 or even his Sony DSLR. I see that as growth in his picture taking diversity. There is no way one can say the NEX is good or not when you take one of his beach photos and compare it against his former style of light behind the should, sunny day, all merry Doc Martin photos. It's apples vs oranges.

Yo dudes, thats meeeeee !!,very active in Green politics these days, seem to be quite good at it for some reason (its what I believe in)

On the subject of the NEX, as Ananda says, I am shooting totally differently with the NEX, and I am impressed so far, it will take time but I can see huge potential with that sensor, into the sun

This is an HDR shot

This is a standard sun over the shoulder pic...a bit oversaturated, but I like it

This was nice I thought

and another HDR

And heres that man again (we did get one green MP in Parliament...me next :-) ) GO GREEEEENS !!

thanks phil for your nice little report the video does not bother me one little bit
i have never ever used video mode on any of my cameras
i did have video camera in the 80s and have loads of my kids birthday partys
going to the beach days and xmas times back then these were put on to
vhs tapes last year i sorted them all out and put them all onto a dvd

i got the old vhs player down from the loft put the tape in connected a scart lead to my
panasonic dvd recorder pressed play then the vhs tape is recorded

o n to the hard drive then you can actually edit the tape you made thirty years ago
and cut out the bits you dont like..then you simply make a dvd,,

the vhs player is now back in the loft but now and then people ask me to transfer
there tapes and make dvds for them regards bassy

I saw some of that flak, but didn't join in. In my opinion, you can tell whether the photo is a snapshot approach or lacking in human skill / control vs a photographer's shot.

It's not how difficult the shot was, what camera was used etc....

A snapshot can be taken by a pro or a serious photographer, likewise a serious photo can be shot by a green newbie - it's the about the shooting of the photo, not the human and not the photo and not degree of difficulty.

As far as I know, the landscape wide shots that Vaughan shoots are serious - he has thought out the shot, he has planned them and it shows in the choice of subject, the choice of season, the choice of time and the choice of light. He knows what he has set for the camera before he clicks.

If, on the other hand, one of us just idly saw a scene, didn't even know what was set on the camera, reached for the camera and clicked, well, that's a snapshot.

And as long as the photo works, that's a snapshot - there's no embarrasment or disdain when you got a good one - it's just snobs who want to artificially differentiate photos.
