Shadow areas print poorly on 870

Sorry if this has been coverd. I'm new to the forum.

When printing shots from my Olympys 2020, I occasionally notice poor print quality, especially in shadow areas, and especially where there is gray, etc. The effect is almost one of pixellation, as though a nozzel is not performing correctly. However, other areas of the photo are exactly correct, with none of this effect. Has anyone else noticed this problem with an 870? And yes, I am using only Epson inks and papers, especially Premium Glossy.

One more thing: is there a document or area that deals with getting the best photos from a 2020, and then getting the best from an Epson 870?

Thanks!--Ric

I know what you mean, although I don't think it's that bad. It's better than any other inkjet printer I've seen. And as you say, the situation only occurs occasionally.

I have also problems in shadow area's. What's deep black on my monitor is printed with a green cast and it looks as if the printer does a level adjust to increase the shadow tones.

I forgot: print at 1440dpi. Gives better results in these shadow area's.

Hi Han:

I think there is something wrong if your gray changes color as a function of reflectivity. What system/settings are you using (settings, PC/MAC ?, etc.)? On several 870/1270 printers that I have seen, the gray remains neutral throughout the range (all printers were using the Epson profile in the ICM mode); this is true on both the premium glossy and HW matte papers.

Hi Joe,

I am using PhotoEnhance4, Sharpness-> Medium, Tone-> None, 1440dpi, highspeed. This gives me extremely sharp prints; the other settings give me unsharp prints. Maybe I should experiment with all these settings some more.

Hi Han:

You might want to try my Epson settings. If you go to the link below, all the settings are shown (refer to Printer Test Photos and Epson Settings for W98). There are some printer test files you might also find useful. The printer test files are for checking color only (not resolution).

BTW - there are also some scanned pictures at the same site; they are only for the evaluation of scanned shadows (discussion subject in another forum) and should NOT be used for printing.

Hope this helps you out. Have a great day!

Sincerely,

I have had the same problem,I've set up my monitor as per PS 5.5 and tried extensive and expensive variations to get a rich black but now I have at last achieved my goal with the help of this chap, what a boon!.here's the site and do follow exactly the instructions ( I forgot initially to change the PS print window SPACE to the profile wanted in my case Epson 1270 Olmec and do uncheck the box too!)
Good luck,Steve.
