So I returned my 7D which had issues and decided instead to get some decent glass. While not a monetary decision, a used Canon 17-55mm f2.8 IS from B&H was certainly easier on the pocketbook. I took this with my XTi (400D) last weekend. I set the ISO at 400 and used the P mode. This put the shot at 1/160s with an aperture of f/4.5. My youngest, in the middle, was a puddle of tears last year riding this "miny" kid-sized roller coaster. But my other 2 children convinced him to not cry, rather say "Weeee!"

Here is another shot. This has been cropped:

Both shots were reduced in file size and sharpened in Photoshop.

Thanks! I would like to have had a little sharper shot, but I also wanted to have some motion. Tough task on short notice (we didn't think they were going to get to ride it), which is why I went with P mode.

Absolutely awesome!

They look like they are having a blast. Thanks for sharing. I have never thought of taking a camera to the amusement park with my son. Not sure he would allow me not to ride with him. :)

Ha he seems to have gotten over his fears!! Really cute shots and the happiness in their faces is great to see. This kind of shot would have been cool to pan - using a slower shutter speed and following your kids so they're sharp but then then rest of the coaster is blurred to give it motion. This requires some practice to perfect the technique though and is definitely not something I've perfected in any way at all, but maybe you might want to give it a try next time.

Thanks. They did have a blast. Some of the rides are ONLY for kids, so no adults allowed. We did ride on a couple with them, which was fun.

Thanks Olivia. The roller coaster did not have a straight section on it except for the platform. Since I was on the other side of the coaster, where the coaster was going up and down and curving, panning was effectively impossible. It is a cool idea, though. I've used it with limited success on some of the other rides, including the Merry-Go-Round.

Thanks for sharing Mark.

Great job with the focus. The most important issue is that they are all having fun. Those young years are precious and your photo captures the moment, treasure them.

Enjoy.

Thank you for the compliment. I didn't see a sad face in any of the cars!
