Hello

I'm shooting with the 5D MkII, and I'm looking for a way to get the audio levels on screen while I shoot. I found the histogram, and I also found the audio level adjustments in the preferences, but I do not see a way to get the levels to show up on the screen while I'm shooting.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

------------S

You need the Magic Lantern firmware to do that.

Thanks for the reply.

I ended up needing to set the audio a few times manually. We used a field mixer to send audio and it worked well.

The 5D MkII audio input jack is not really designed (with a 1/8" din jack rather than a huge XLR) for the kind of use that a pro shoot would require. That being said, it held up well. The audio was pretty good and the video was outstanding.

The shoot was a piece for our local NBC affiliate. Their P2 cameras were both offline, so I volunteered my 5D MkII and they LOVED the footage. We shot almost exclusively on my 50mm f1.4 with a nice, narrow DOF. They were blown away by the clarity and softness of the images and background.

I'll look into the firmware replacement. Are there any risks associated with it?

Thanks

could you please elaborate a bit on how it works with a field mixer? I've been shooting concerts with a Røde Stereo Mic attached, and results are awful (audio) as I cant set audio levels while shooting, and I dont even want to try automatic. What equipment did you use, and is it portable? Thanks

If you're taking about the Magic Lantern FW (as opposed to one of the recent Canon updates), there is a ton of discussion out there regarding it. But my understanding is it doesn't overwrite the camera's OEM FW - it just loads the Magic Lantern FW (which is saved to the boot sector of the CF card) temporaily into memory. I think this means you need to reload it everytime you turn the camera off.
