I am thoroughly enjoying my K7 with one problem, Pentax seems to have gone back to making the memory card difficult to remove. In the ist*D it was terrible, in the K10 there was a huge improvement and now with the K7 I am back to using tweezers.

Any suggestions? Any tricks that make it easier?

Every time this question is asked, it warrants my picture:

However, I find firmly grabbing it between my index finger and thumb is easiest for me (index finger on door side of card). Others like to lightly flick the card and it comes flying out. The pliers are a joke, but only halfway :)

I push the card in with a fingernail and let it pop out as far as it will go (it does NOT shoot out of the camera). The card tneds to go almost halfway out and is then much easier to grab.

This has been a common complaint since the K-7 first hit the streets with countless dpreview threads about it. People will offer many different tips for removing the card, but in the end, it is just plain awkward to remove it. Some claim that it gets easier to remove after you break the camera in but it still seems just as awkward for me now as the first day I bought the camera (about a year ago).

The simplest answer I have seen is put a piece of black tape on the card, extending about a half inch and fold that back on itself. It sits inside the door and you can just pick it out and pull when you have the door open.

I never forget a face, but in your case I'll be glad to make an exception.

By this, I mean let it use the spring to get the card out ... while it is inserted, press it down on the very edge and slide your finger off the card so it "pops" past the point where it is being gripped by the card reader in the camera. It becomes second nature after a few times - and I have no issues getting the card out anymore.

I know there are people who have had problems, but I never found it an issue and no, my hands/fingers aren't small.

Some of the suggestions supplied have been very good.

There really seems to be a great deal of variation in the card slots on the K-7. Some people never had a problem, for some it got better with use (like mine), and for some maybe they never had a physical problem per say but find it awkward to get to. For me, it was an absolute bear to get the card out at first. The only way I could do it was to get my nail in the little slot, and when it would come out it would go FLYING across the room because it took so much force. It didn't seem like it was getting any better for a while even though I was working it in and out a lot, but it did. It never got to the smoothness of my K10D or K100D, but after a couple weeks I could get it out normally with my fingertips.

The other thing to watch out for is when you put the card back in make sure the orange light flashes twice, if it doesn't you'll have a card error when you turn the camera on. It never fails when I look for it to flash it always does, but if I don't then it'll happen.

I also find the tape works well, I found a clear tape similar to"sellotape" that works well, the one I use has a high quality adhesive that won't bleed with time.

no problems for me, i actually like it better compared to k10/k20 - with k-7 i can remove it much faster.

i guess a lot of people are trying just to rip it out without giving it a push first and that's the problem

Keep your tweezers on you at all times :-)

Seriously though, this is only one of the reasons I kept my K10D (one of the first batch sent to Australia) and didn't upgrade to the K7. I'm hoping the eventual K7 replacement will fix my issues with the camera, but its anyones guess when -- or rather if that happens.

All I can do is wait...

The sticker on the Transend 8Gb Class 6 cards I bought made the cards stick in my K20D, so I removed the stickers on them. I also noted some wear on the paper tag on one of my older Sandisk 2Gb SD cards, so I now have removed all the stickers from my SD cards. I figure it is just better in the long run not to accumulate debris in the card slot.

Along this same vein, when I first purchase a SD card, I run it in and out of an external card reader until it runs in and out really smoothly. I usually can see where the plastic is polished on the SD card from doing this. I just prefer the plastic to end up in the external reader than in the SD slot of the camera so the time it takes to do this isn't an issue for me.

Thank you
Russell

I use the same method...

  • Use the first finger of your right hand to press and release. It pops up a short distance.
  • Rest your first finger on top of the card and press your thumbnail into the indent near the top.
  • Brace your third finger on the camera next to the latch door
  • Gripping the card between your first finger and your thumbnail you can gently ease the card out while keeping your third finger firmly pressed against the camera.
It is a simple routine, easily learned and works reliably.
I am left handed and it even works for me. :)

This works fine on my K-7, without the card flying anywhere. I have to be careful going back to my K20, though, because on that it does fly out.

The first time I went back after using the K-7 for a while the card flew out of my K20, bounced on the edge of my coffee cup - on the far side of the desk - but then fell back. Whew. I've been ultra careful ever since.
