I am taking a trip to Mexico and have to travel light. I am looking for a very lightweight manual focus zoom somewhere in the 70-300 range.

I think I may have inadvertantly found what I need in a Pentax SMC-F 80-200mm 4.7-5.6 I had lying around. But I'm open to other suggestions, especially with a larger focal range.

It seems that the early AF lenses still had aperature control, and are much lighter than the earlier MF lenses.

Anyone have a favorite traveling zoom for m4/3 that might be under $100?

Have you considered the Oly 40-150 zoom? FT lens with MFT adapter included. AF , exposure/flash metering, etc. with your camera. Lightweight.

Only problem is price at $200 but might be better in the long run for your needs. You can use the MFT adapter with other Oly legacy lenses in the future if you get the lens acquisition itch . :)

Good luck and enjoy your trip.

It's not what camera you use, it's how you use it.

The lens = 80mm to 300mm on your camera.

Regards.

Hello, yes I've thought of the Oly 40-150 but not ready just yet. I've developed an addiction for the MF on the G1. I absolutely love it and have aquired many old MF lenses.

My only problem for this trip is the MF lenses are too heavy to carry around. So I'm at the point of finding some of the undiscovered treasures of the early AF lenses with aperture control. Truly, this Pentax-F I have is quite easy to manually focus and is very small.

Anyone else use small AF zooms on the G1 in manual focus mode. It's a topic I dont see enough people talking about:-)

Superb idea! But even if I was to collect my way to a nice lens, the idea of walking around Mexico with a bunch of expensive camera equipment isn't appealing.

In anycase, I find the manual lenses produce some amazing photos.

How are you going on a trip to another country and don't have more than $200 budget for a new lens?

What part of Mexico are you going to?

I'm going to the colonial heartland. Guanajauto and Morelia mainly.

I'm a little surprised about you guys wanting me to lay down the cash for autofocus. The manual focus on the G1 is outstanding.

I have a couple of Sigma AF lenses, part of Pentax MZ50 era kit; they were extremely cheap and very low priced. Both are a little bulky, but are very light and handle quite well. Despite being AF lenses, all functions work well enough to be used manually, but performance isn't stellar.

The Sigma 28-80 works well enough as a macro lens, but I seldom use it as I have 3 other, dedicated macro lenses (and the E-P1 kitlens).

The Sigma 100-300 performs adequately - not fantastic - is very light, handles well and is extremely common. It collapses to be relatively short for this kind of lens, yet when extended is light enough not to be a concern for the lens or tripod mount. I use this lens relatively often, especially when away from home - I find the weight of my other MF zooms (older 70-210 units) to be something of a hindrance. The Sigma is lighter and has more reach, also has a lens hood.

I wouldn't recommend these lenses if image quality is paramount, but they are adequate and better than nothing.

You can get the Oly 40-150 and adapter for under $100 if you scrape around eBay and other B/S/T forums. This auction just ended yesterday. http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300441629731&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_2968wt_990

Shipped to the US, it would have been about $90.
