I'm thinking of upgrading from Win XP to Win 7. However I cannot find a driver for my film scanner. Anyone managed it? Before I buy the new OS! It's just I could use more RAM, and generally improve flow.

Thanks. it's a desktop, and I've added RAM but XP SP3 cannot find it (all) It limits at 3Gb and I added 4.

Oh that old chestnut!

Well I have to say I've been using Seven for a while now and I have no complaints. especially after two years of Vista!

I've emailed Canon, had an auto response, so just waiting.

I use Vuescan for my flatbed. Does it not still need drivers? What about the dust removal etc?

They list Vista compatibility and the vast majority of Vista drivers work on 7..

The have a contact form here: https://www.canon-europe.com/Support/Consumer_Products/contact_support/index.aspx

Why not email them.
Good idea.
That said there's nothing to stop you adding Ram to a XP system!
Windows XP is available in 32bit and 64 bit
Windows 7 is available in 32bit and 64 bit

If you stay on 64bit, you will find it hard to get drivers unless the makers take special care in providing you drivers.

If you stay on 32bit, you can't access more than 3.x Gb of RAM

AFAIK

I also want to use my FS400US with Windows 7 (32 bit). Please let me know how you get on with Canon or otherwise.

I use a SiiG fast SCSI pro PCI adapter which is recognised by Windows 7 and the driver installs. The scanner itself is recognised by Windows 7 but it says it can't find a suitable driver but there is no option to navigate to the folder where the driver is.

After that I started the Scanner and Camera installation wizard but, although I navigated to the FS40US.inf file on the CD, no device models came up.

Has anyone managed to install it?

I've put the same question to Canon's on-line support in Sweden and got a prompt reply that no driver for W7 exists and a superficial suggestion I should install the scanner on a separate PC (or buy a new scanner!).

Without having tried it I believe there are two or three ways to solve the problem:
  • create a W XP-partition on your boot HD from where you can run your PC under W XP, including the FS4000 drivers, and operate your scanner from there
  • there is a way to emulate W XP under W 7 (Microsoft has it well documented) which might offer the same possibility as above
  • same as the first alternative, but using LINUX/Ubuntu
Please advise if you have success through any of these routes!

Thanks, Johan.

I had thought of your second suggestion and have installed the xp mode in Win 7. Having trouble getting the scanner recognised so I can install the XP drivers as this normally done on booting.

I'm still trying. Your first suggestion should work. I'll let you know how I get on.

Many thanks again.

i suppose i'm going to have to figure this out sooner or later. i'll probably go the vuescan route first.

Can vuescan supply their own W7-drivers? I thought they just were a clearing house for many manufacturers' drives. In this case, Canon has no W7-drivers for this old scanner.

If you upgrade to Win 7 you can always run XP with Virtualbox in Win 7 or get Win 7 Pro/Ultimate and you can download the files needed for XP mode.

I use Win7 Pro with no success re the acceptance of XP drivers for the FS4000 (but it works for several other types of peripherals ...). This option was not suggested by Canon's on-line support.

32bit XP has a 4gb limit... You need to figure out why all the ram isn't being accessed.

I've tried the demo for Vuescan and can mention:
  • it is a generic program for many types of scanners and runs also under W7
  • my FS4000 scanner worked without problems using Vuescan
  • the program is not too user-friendly and seems not to be able to do dust-removal with the FS4000 (I may be mistaken on this point)
  • the original Canon program for FS4000 was rather easier to operate with more custom-functions
  • my conclusion is that FS4000/W7 users may well find it more convenient to use Vuescan than to set up a W XP environment just for the old Canon drivers
  • however, if you can go the W XP way you'll get better functionality, I think
