Which one is better?

I know there is no answer ;-) or is there an answer?

If not ... tell me the positives and the regrets of both cameras!

Please tell me which one is better or worse for what?

Which one would you buy (or have you already bought) and why?

Thanks

It uses Sony's memeory stick. 128mb is max, but I hear the 1gig sticks are on the way. Might be a year before it gets here but 128mb max stick is small. The camera takes excellent images and has great low light focusing. The lens is better that the CP5000

The 717 lens may be better but not for macros, where the 5000 is much better! Also, although the 717 is much improved over the 707, I think Nikon colors are still more natural.

Version 1.7 was the firmware upgrade for the 5000 and it was free. the 717 is the firmware upgrade for the 707 and it cost a 1000 bucks;-) The 5000 takes excellent superwide angle shots and excellent zoom shots with addon lenses. The 717 takes excellent zoom shots. There isn't a camera that can do what the 5000 can do. I think you might have ment the 5700 or the 707. They are more equal.

Hmmmm. IMHO the F717 is more than a firmware upgrade for the F707. There are hardware changes, as well.

So many projects, so little time.

There isn't a camera that can do what the 5000 can do.
One can add a wide converter lens the same way one can add a tele converter lens. The problem with converter lenses is that the true meaning of zoom (selecting almost any focal length within the range) is lost. Neither 5000 nor 5700 can zoom from 28mm to 280mm with any converter lens. But it's quite obvious that more people, including myself, prefer losing the 28mm - 35mm zoom range over losing the 85mm - 280mm range. (focal lengths are 35mm equivalents).

I have gone to a process of deciding which camera to buy. On my list I had the Minolta 7i, the Sony 717 and Nikon CP 4500,5000 and 5700. I ended up with the CP5000 since I love the wide angle ability without adapters (28mm equiv.) and it is really a very handy camera (the grip is excellent compared with all the rest of my competition, particularly the 7i which feels cheap). I have tried it now for a couple of days and the operation is quite straight forward (coming from a Nikon 6006). In macro the flash overdoes it and has to be reduced to -1 or -2 EV. Unfortunately one (minor) con is a stuck pixel which hopefully will be removed soon.

Some friends and I did a lot of investigation comparing features that we would use VS Fluffy features that sound good, but we would rarely use.... 2 bought the F707 and I bought the Nikon CP 5000.

Bottom line -- Picture quality was great for both camera's.... The colors were a little better with the CP5000, but really in the long run, no big deal because you would only notice the difference if you were comparing the same picture from 2 different cameras.

Since both camera's are good, the real deciding factor was size.... the CP5000 is way more mobile for folks on the go, traveling....... Those who purchased the Sony envy the compact size of the CP 5000 which allows me to bring it along, when they don't want to lug the Sony around. I miss the zoom..... but mobility far exceeds zoom.....

Sony's were produced slightly better results until I got over the learning curve with the Nikon...

These are all the same with the Sony F707 or 717....

For what it is worth,

Doug B.
