I am in the same boat. I am going to purchase the T2i with the 18-55 kit lens AND the 55-250 Canon LE as well. Does Canon carry lens hoods for these two lenses?

Thanks.

You can find hoods for both lenses on the B&H website.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com

Look up the lenses, then below the lens you'll see an Accessories section. You can get hoods by Canon, or save a few bucks and get the Pearstone version. I have the Pearstone for the Canon 55-250 and it's great.

For the 18-55 I would suggest just an inexpensive collapsible rubber lens hood. The front element of the lens rotates, so a petal hood won't do much good. The actual Canon hood is too shallow to be much good at 55mm. With a collapsible hood you can adjust it anyway you like.

As for the 55-250, I agree with Guitarfish. No need to spend extra money on the Canon hood.

...And get your caps lock fixed! ;)

i would recommend not getting a canon version... not worth the money.. u can easily get a third party lens hood (two of them) for the price of one canon version..

i just bought the 500d and the two lens kits up 2 months ago. and bought these lens hoods..

good luck! i have them on all the time ever since i bought them... and used them when i was on a trip to florida last month... they both can go on reverse on the lens also if u dont want to use it to make it look more cooler!

Not many of the Canon lenses share the same hood size, so you need to take care to get the right ones. That said, there are tons of ebay stores selling copies of the Canon hoods for a fraction of the cost of the genuine ones. You can't go too far wrong really - it's only a piece of plastic...

I have the XSi with the 18-55 and 55-250.

The Canon type bayonet mount shade is useless on the 18-55. I bought a screw in Bower tulip from B&H. It does clip corners a bit at 18, but otherwise is OK. I do have to rotate it if I make a dramatic change in focal length.

By the way, the cheap rubber fold up hoods clip the corners just the same as the Bower at 18. Zoom in just a bit, and there's no problem.

For the 55-250 I have the Hoya for zooms, also from B&H. Nice and deep, and no corner clipping.

Note for both lenses: If you use a polarizer with the Canon bayonet types, you have to reach down inside the hood to rotate the polarizer. With a screw in, you just mount the hood on the filter and rotate the whole works. This is more of a problem with the tulip type, two stacked things to rotate, etc.

I find that the cheap rubber ones have the advantage that they protect the lens if you drop it or knock it on something. At 18mm mine was vignetting a bit so I just cut a bit off with scissors until it didn't. I know that you can collapse them and get the same effect but sometimes I would forget.

I get my lens hoods from Fotodiox, fulfilled by Amazon. Search Amazon for a lens hood for your kit lenses and you'll most likely see a Fotodiox link.

Fotodiox.com has a direct web site, however, I've never ordered from them directly, preferring the protection I get via using Amazon.
