When I bought my K10D back in 2006, I gave my K100D to my Daughter. Along with the camera, I gave her two sets of Eneloops and a charger.

Well, being the sometimes "SFB" that she is, she lost the charger. She hasn't asked for another one and says she hasn't bought a new one.

So! I asked her "How are you charging the batteries?" To which she responded "I plug the camera into the USB port on my computer and that charges the batteries.

Has anyone heard of this happening and working? I sure wouldn't have thought it to work.

Any comments or opinions on how, or why, she is getting this to work??????

Sorry, that won't work :) There are devices which can recharge their batteries via USB (mostly Li-Ion, I'm not aware of any using AAs; there are USB AA chargers, though); but no DSLR can do that.
Your daughter should buy another charger, before the Eneloops runs out of juice.

Logitech's new "Performance Mouse MX" uses NiMH rechargeables with a built-in USB charger, but that's the only device that does this that I've ever run across. I only know about that one because my brother picked one up recently for his new laptop. Not a clue about whether any DSLRs have that feature, but it seems like a silly one to include. Why on earth would I want to tether my camera to a computer for 6-12 hours just to charge the batteries, especially when NiMH chargers aren't that expensive, even for the better quality ones? Could this "feature" be a completely accidental side effect of the electrical wiring?

Let me address both posts. My Daughter lost the charger more than a year ago. So. I suspect the Eneloops would have long since run out of juice.

I have not seen the evidence of her claim other than the fact the she uses her camera and it has the Eneloops in it. And, she "Claims" that's how she's charging them.

She doesn't use her camera everyday. So, leaving it charge for a bunch of hours wouldn't affect her one way or the other.

There could very well be some wierd thing going on with the wiring. Who knows.

Fantastic if Pentax would offer this as a standard feature in all new cameras, as an alternative source of power supply and charging method. I am all for open standards. DNG, SDCard, mini-USB for data transfer and charging, HDMI, 3.5mm earphone plugs,.. and of course AA sized batteries.

I would be afraid to leave my camera plugged into the computer for that long. A while back when I was researching cameras, I read a post about a person that was uploading pics to the computer during a storm. The lights went out and then the power came back in a few seconds. The computer rebooted but the Canon no longer worked. I've been using a card reader ever since.

The fact they haven't say a lot - about how good those Eneloops are.

She most likely used some devices who can recharge via usb, and expected the camera to do the same.

I doubt there is.
