Why are film photographers hanging around here?

I use D30, 35mm film, and medium format too. My film photography has improved by the immediate learning experience of the D30, and the automatic recording of the camera settings.

The equipment is not the main part of the hobby()is it?)

Given my age (20), 10 years in SLR photography isn't doing badly. I'd say I've got at least another 40 years left...

Digital Photography....

I missed the part where that excluded digitisation of 35mm film through the use of a scanner?

Well i cant directly name any board, but there is alot more film camera related newsgroups and irc channels tehn digital related ones... dont know why... personally i shoot digital.

Is it because there are no lively film forums comparable to this
one on the web? If not, that in itself is a telling commentary on
the relative state of film vs. digital.
Maybe these fellows are poor "Ghosts of Photography Past" who have
nowhere else to go so they insist on haunting this "Digital" forum.

You say this as if it as a bad thing? I wouldn't be so hasty to judge. From what I have read here so far I would say that many newbie shooters could learn a thing or two from those ghosts of the past....such as how to light, the decisive moment vs shooting a short video and how to focus combined with a knowledge of depth of field....

I shoot both though the new generation of digital camera's quality mean that my stockpile of film in the freezer can now dwindle to next to nothing but there are times when I may need to shoot a job using a specific film type/effect that I might not be able to replicate with digital. Though the only thing I can think of is B&W off the top or if I need to shoot medium and large format for specific client.

I didn't mean that as a put down. I'm in my early 60's and retired. Getting the D-60, which I have on order, is a big step for me. I may have lost my mind.

I started taking basketball photos for my junior high newspaper when I was 13. My dad had a Speed Graphic 4 x 5 press camera which he claimed belonged to his business. He recently admitted to me that it was his but didn't want to tell Mother. LOL. Lies over camera expenses are certainly not new.

not the Canon Digital Talk Forum.
FYI, DPR stands for DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY REVIEW. As in DIGITAL. Not Film. If you want to shoot film, nobody is stopping you, but outside of rough comparison, it's discussion doesn't really belong in a digital forum. I especially gag on film afficionados coming here to rag on digital, illuminating us digital fools on how superior film is, and will always remain. This place used to be crawling with them, but thankfully, they've pretty much slithered back under their rock. Effeteluddite.com perhaps?

I had a D30, but sold it. I'm getting a D60 next week.
In the mean time I've been shooting film and spending a lot of time here.

If that makes me a ghost it gives me only a few more days worth of haunting, so I'd better do the most of it.

OOOooooOOOooOOOooOOO

That fits me to a T.

Both digital and film create an... IMAGE. So really, we're just swapping info on image creation.
That a lot of them are here already because they have a consumer
Digital and visiting here gives them the opportunity to talk Lenses
in a familiar environment

their presence also gives us the "full frame" perspective on lenses
we already own and that's good with full frame DSLRs coming out

A bit of film chat never hurts - a lot of us use Film EOSes too :)

I'm really curious..... What is it that people who shoot film have done to you that you feel it necessary to put them down so harshly?..... just asking

I keep my film cameras around for only two reasons.

First, I have a sentimental attachement to them. That's OT, so I won't dwell on that issue.

Second, IR photography is one of my specializations. When the D30 came out, I saw great results both with and without IR and starting the two-year project of psyching myself up to spend thousands of dollars on a new camera. When the D60 came out (better quality and lower price), I jumped on it, only to find that it seems to do everything the D30 did, except IR.

So I keep my trusty old OM-1 and a #25 red filter around for IR shooting. But I've been able to keep away from film for everything else I shoot (night photography, landscapes, graveyards, and kids).

My wife and three very young kids would highly
disapprove if I were to drop 4K+ on the 1D ;-)
What??? You were planning on telling them????
Some priorities for me right now -
1. Fund the 529 plan for the kids' education
2. Pay off both of our cars
3. Start furnishing our brand new house
Maybe it's time to rethink your priorities. May I suggest:

1. Fund the 529 plan for the kids' education
2. Canon 1D
3. A few CF cards
4. A Nixvue Vista mass storage
5. Extra hard drive for your PC
(...next five priorities deleted...)
10. Pay off both of our cars
11. Start furnishing our brand new house

that many are incorporating some digital techniques in their
processing such as scanning etc. and are looking for tips. Surely
it isn't for the purpose of rubbing salt in the wounds of those
that are tenaciously hanging onto their beloved (and quickly
dieing) method of recording images.
I was in this forum for almost one year before I lost all sense of priorities and bought a D60. Why? Because I wanted to learn what I was getting into and mentally prepare myself for spending the big bucks.

Once upon a time, and for many years thereafter, a digital photography forum was an easy place for film photographers to evacuate their bowels, and that from great height. As a long-time digital enthusiast and forum participant, I was merely commenting on how grateful I am that the bombast has eased somewhat, so that I must no longer glance upward (backward?) in trepidation. The intention of my post was celebratory, rather than denigratory. I find this appropriate, since this is (at the risk of repeating myself) a digital forum. If my effeteluddite.com crack seemed unduly 'bombs away' on the film set, well... that's just me shaking many years of accumulation off of my person. What can I say? At least it's hitting their shoes, instead of their hat?

(still struggling with an old fashioned D30! and the wife's G2)

What if this is as good at it gets

Thanks for your reply, although I must admit that I'm still no wiser as to why this issue apparently raises such vitriol and passion....... seems to me like the theological debate about how many angels can stand on the head of a pin. Its not even about the survival of an industry..... most of the major camera and film companies are involved in both film and digital imaging anyway and photo retailers market both.

I'm neutral.... i enjoy and shoot both digital and film and if one or the other were to disappear I'd just carry on with the other. Can't see why its such a big deal, after all as others have said, the camera is only a light box, the difference being the image capture medium.

But, it is regretable that some people on this forum think photography began with digital photography.

I love this forum, too.... I've learnt and continue to learn a lot and I enjoy many of the friendly debates on strongly held opinions. After all, most of us have some of those..... I think, for example that the last real car built was the 1967 Jaguar E-Type, but some of my car buff pals keep raising beastly things like 1963 split window Corvettes! ( just kidding, folks, LOL).

It's when the debate turns nasty, with personal epithets and vitriolic comments regarding other people that I take pause and wonder if I want to continue. I do so because the good stuff far, far outways the bad.

It's Thanksgiving Day here in Canada..... Please celebrate it with us

Hi all, this will be my first posting here. I use a canon elan 7 and an olympus point and shoot d40. I rarely use the d40, so pretty much I am mostly a film photographer. I love this forum. I have learned so much just by reading all of the posts here. I am one of the ones here that plan on either getting a 1d or d60. This forum has been incredibly informative. I also read all of Phil's reviews. :)

Andy,

Great Stuff!!

I've been trying to justify the 1D or 1Ds since the holiday season is just around the corner. Here is how I thought it would go....

"Honey, it'll be the perfect present for me and I'll not need anything else for a long time."

"With the twins 1 year birthday coming up, we can get instant results instead of having to wait or use the cheapo digital camera."

"The holiday season is a great time to get something like this. Think of all the fun we can have."

LOL
