Hello,

I'm new on the forum. I'm travelling to asia shortly with my F707. Does anyone know if the airport securtiy devices have any affects on memory sticks - with or without shots on them? Is it better to "carry on" or "baggage check" the memory sticks? I have never travelled internationally and just want to make sure none of my pictures gets erased. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance!!

The X-Ray machines they use to scan checked luggage are much stronger than the walk-through machines, so the effect, if any, would be even worse. Even if there were no effect, which I simply don't know, the checked luggage travels in the belly of the plane which is not heated. Temperature for flights @ 30,000 feet (all inter-continental) the temperature can reach -30C (ever heard of the frozen people trying to get a free ride by hiding in the landing gear?). Check the specifications of most electronic hardware and it will tell you storage temperature should be between 0C and 55C (some state -10C, still a far cry from would it might face).

So what should you do? Try to ask for "film safe" x-ray machines. Can anybody give us any specifics?

Just found the sheet that came with my Sony Memory Stick. It states that the operating temperature is 0-60C (non-condensating). Nothing about storage temperature. Is that typical for Sony, or what?

The temperature thing is not true. The baggage hold of airliners is pressurized and heated. They ship animals in the holds! At -40 degrees which is the same in either F or C, all sorts of things in baggage would be destroyed.

The cold temperature thing is in the wheel wells which are of course not pressurized no heated. Mighty cold!

Film should not be put through the CT scanners in airports.

There is no problem running your MSs through the carryon scanner. Mine have been throught hundreds of times! NEVER check the camera or MSs. Checked bags have a very bad habit of deciding to vacation someplace other than where you are going.

I go through security about 5 times a week and almost always have my memory sticks in my bag. I've never had a problem. Steve

I would highly recommend taking all of your camera equipment on as hand luggage (size permitting). I went to Malaysia this year from Sydney and took my P5, 3 memory sticks, 2 batteries, digital wallet and all power cables as hand luggage.

No problems with memory loss, and did not have to worry about the baggage handlers in the airports.

Done it many time, not a problem. As much as I hate the small capacity of MS, it passed my washer&dryer test. I washed it couple times and it still works.

I just spent 6 weeks in Asia over the summer. I made sure to carry my equipment in a carry-on bag. I had absolutely no problems with running my stuff through the plethora of X-Ray machines. I didn't lose an image during the whole trip. My carry-on contained:

Sony F707
5 128MB Memory Sticks
Various lenses and filters
Charging equipment
Mp3 Player (CD type)
Sony Picturebook
DVD/CDRW Drive (it's external)
Lots of different batteries

I will say that American airports had a tendency to want to look through my stuff more carefully, but everything went smoothly.

Thanks for everyones help!! I'll take everyones advice and bring my F707 and memory sticks as "carry on" luggage. I'm hoping to take some night shots of all the neon signs in Tokyo.

Hope everyone has a great week and "Thanks" again-
