My DD (csipotter) ended up going kayaking for the first time yesterday. My friends jokingly dubbed ourselves The Yellow Kayak Club because most of us bought our kayaks recently from the local Costco, so our group is comprised of yellow kayaks except for one red one.

So, the Yellow Kayak club invited my daughter to join us, she had never been in a kayak and was a tad bit leery of ending up upside down despite my reassurances, by the time we came to shore (we leisurely paddled for about 2 hours) she has become a convert. I took my P850 w/me, ziplocked for safekeeping as well as put into another water proof bag just in case I did have a mishap, but all was well.

Only problems I had were operator error, where every time I pulled the camera out of its protective plastics I had somehow managed to change the setting to manual mode, would then have to turn the camera off, reset my mode to aperture, then turn it on again. :)

so, here she is, csipotter in a kayak for the first time. The rain had been pouring that morning up until the point we arrived at the boat launch, after that we only encountered a few stray drops. The water was smooth for paddling despite the threat of the gray skies :) Some of the interesting things we encountered, but I was unable to photograph: a seal popped its head up in the water not far from us at one point, we saw a young eagle dive for something not far from shore.

Interesting contrast of yellow against a grey scene.

is no right or wrong - there are just instances of
individuality and individual choice.'

next time try a shot with her coming straight at you on collision course

i just think that may work out quite well as long as she changes course at the last
few seconds

I like your photo a lot, its a great family memory. However, I would prefer a bit of pp to lighten it a bit and a small drop.

Bassy, that is a good idea, next time when she is playing chicken w/me in the water that will make a good shot. I have to admit I was just trying to get the moment recorded, not thinking of anything else since I was trying to be careful of the P850, I didn't want it going overboard lol

Sarah Joyce, I agree w/your assessment, not the best picture. I use Picasa for PP and cropping, but didn't do anything to this particular photo except cropping slightly and lightening slightly.

I'm researching small compact rugged waterproof cameras for kayaking and adventure. I plan to go white water rafting again this August w/friends so it would be super fun to have a waterproof compact I could attach to myself for quick pictures. :P I'm seriously looking at the Sony TX5.

It would be great if Kodak came out w/a decent rugged waterproof compact camera.

thanks Ananda, the yellow definitely stands out in all of that gray. lol

all ways take a dog with you if you loose the paddles
chuck the dog in and he will tow you back doing the dog paddle lol sony h2

these are great fun Bassy, my dog would not like riding in the kayak w/me, she is about 90 lbs and likes terra firma under her paws

I did get 2 bonus paddles when I purchased the kayak. Those 2 paddles are of the same orientation, so won't fit together, so if I ever lose one of the sections I hope it is the opposite section, otherwise I'll have 3 half paddles w/ no opposites to match :P

Nice capture; She looks very confident, and I can see that she is having a great time. Thanks for sharing this picture with us.
