Sold the 85 1.2 kept the 1.8 was nervous about decision untill this shot

Cute picture...but the 85mm f/1.8 doesn't even come close. Your going to have seller's remorse for making what IMO was a real bad decision. Settling for a lens is never a good idea.

I kept them both and sold my 100L instead, I can't be happier to get rid of the 100L , I hated its bokeh and I think this lens causes more badning in OOF area than anything else.

I will never sell my 85L and I always have the 85f1.8 for action.
This was shot with the 85 1.8 on a 5d mk II. For now the 85 1.8 version will do.

Nice picture - i like it. Not wanting to be rude, but: what do you want to show? Yes, the 1.8/85 is a solid performer, better than 85L in some respects - we really do know that. And still it lacks the magic of the 85L. But if you are happy so far - great! :)

Is the contrast, color & bokeh of 85/1.8 the same as 85/1.2? Suppose if you shoot a portrait at f/1.8 with both lens? I'm just wondering..

If you have a sample picture of this comparison, that would be nice..

Thanks,

I have the 85 f1.8 version together with five other L lenses to compare it to, though not the 85L. I got it just under a year ago after reading such good reports about it. Most of the good things written about it are true - it's very sharp, with really fast snappy AF and good bokeh, and has very good build quality. But a slight disappointment for me has been the rather 'weak/ thin' colour. It just doesn't have the beautiful smooth rich colours of e.g. the 17-40L, never mind the balance of contrast, rich colour and detail of the 35L, though given the price difference you probably wouldn't expect it to. Even increasing saturation in PP doesn't produce the same effect. That said, it's tremendous VFM - a real bargain.

I sold mainly because it was so SSSSLLLLOOOOWWWW.....

do you mean the 100mm Macro LIS?

what didn't you like about that lens? I have the non L and was thinking of seling my 100 macro and 85 f1.8 for the 100 macro LIS. Is that a bad idea in your opinion?

Actually, this shot doesn't show the difference between two lenses.. From this close distance, 50mm f/1.8 or 85mm f/1.8 or any other fast lens would yield more or less the same result, because distance become dominant for the depth of field...

85mm f/1.2 has a great advantage to emphasize the distant objects against bacground (or foreground).. And I am not talking about the f/1.2 advantage on shutter speed.

Actually it is the most interesting lens that I ever used.. Yes it has a slow focusing, but with that very little depth of field, I wonder if fast focus would be reliable.

Hmm.. that's what I thought. In terms of sharpness I think both lens are comparable, but for color, bokeh & contrast, 85 L wins.

So I guess I should just wait & save up for 85 L, & I'm still cool now for portrait with my 70-200 2.8 L.

Thanks for the input.
