Nikon D700 Discontinued

D300s I'm afraid is much more advanced than the A700, that came out inbetween the A700 and now. D300 already had a few more tricks than the A700 did from the get go.

I don't think that Nikon users feel left behind in comparison to Sony enthusiasts, unless your talking about the crowd that wants a camera under 3k with more than 12mp.

Yes of course, both of the D300 cameras have been more advanced than the A700. But the D300s is a stopgap to allow Nikon to work on a new D400 without a Sony sensor. The D300s has very few advances over the D300, other than video. Maybe in some ways the new A7xx will not compete with these Nikons, but I am betting it will have much better IQ.

Meanwhile, IMHO, Nikon is beating the pants off all competitors in the FF market.

True information?

Then a new super duper Nikon camera must be around the corner and therefore a super duper Sony camera as well. Both with the same sensor. Great news!
Yes, with the next generation camera you won't even have to leave the house. Just tell the camera to go take some pictures and wait for it to do it's thing.

Wow! First the a700 - and now the D700. It must have something to do with the number 700. It's obviously bad luck! (wink wink)

I believe it could be true but I hope it is not. We need Nikon around

Paid a hefty 3K when D700 hits the ground but the current price is still very close.
Oh no and there is no replacement. What are all the D700 users going to do?

Sony and Nikon reportedly had a falling out. It will be interesting which sensor Nikon will use.
The D700 will probably be replaced by a D700S with movie capability. The D700 sensor is designed and owned by Nikon, but probably made by Sony in a corner of the Sony sensor factory. The APS-C sensors Nikon uses are all Sony sensors. There is no other viable alternative. Panasonic and Samsung are the only other sensor makers who can conceivably make sensors for Nikon, but neither one is known for having low noise.

Really? MUCH better IQ than the D300S? Have you seen the IQ from the D300S? Or indeed pretty much any DSLR on the market? I simply fail to see how in one generation we we are going to see a leap forward in image quality an order of magnitude greater than what is currently available. Ain't gonna happen.

The absolute BEST you can expect is very minor improvements to DR and high ISO noise.

I disagree here too - and that's coming from someone who switched to Nikon. I'd say Canon is beating the pants off everyone else in the FF market purely and simply by virtue of the 5DII. Sony can hold their head high by pitting the A900 against it whereas Nikon have nothing in that class (the D700 is a niche product) and nearly two years since the launch of the A900 and 5DII Nikon STILL have nothing in that class.

I am not interest in FF personally but it wouldn't surprise me if there are a lot of D300S type shooters interested in moving to FF but effectively stuck due to Nikon lack of an appropriate camera. I am sure the lack of a true competitor to the 5DII has probably hurt Nikon. One can only guess as to why that camera has not come.

I won't argue with you about Nikon vs Canon FFs. I was thinking about what I know Nikon has coming. But the D300s is still the same sensor as the A700, and just marginally better in IQ. So they are in the same generation still, as sensors. So yes, I believe that Sony will move ahead of that camera in IQ when it arrives. And the D400, it is my understanding, will not arrive until next year.

Fair enough - I was only really taking issue with the (apparent) suggestion that there would be a big step forward in IQ. I don't think there will. However I have no argument with the suggestion that a minor step forward on the A700 replacement will see it edge ahead of the D300S. That I happen to agree with.

In all cases though (A700 vs D300 vs D300S vs the future in both brands) the difference will be very small in each instance.

I hope that if somehting is discontinued, it doesn't mean that somehting I already bought vanishes in thin air...
So: if you already have one, what is your problem if something is discontinued?
