I'm using a G2 with the 420EX and double A's but they don't seem to last too long and before you know it, the recycle times are very long. Can anyone recommend a good rechargeable battery (with charger)? What are the strongest currently on the market (mAH rating) and where can these be purchased? Thanks for your help in advance.

In my 550ex flash, I've been using PowerEX 1800maH NiMH batteries from http://www.thomasdistributing.com/ -- get the Maha 204f charger as well, it's an excellent little smart charger. Whole kit & kaboodle with 4 batteries is $37. See http://www.thomasdistributing.com/mh-c204f-4aa180dc.htm

I've been using Maha batteries and this charger for well over two years and they're still going strong. Just got a set of the new 1800maH batteries a month ago, but so far they seem to last and last.

Good luck.

I was thinking of getting these:

And they are available at some local US shops (Circuit City).

Ray-O-Vac makes rechargable NiMh batteries with a one hour charger that is very highly rated. That's what I use with the 420EX. The charger comes with 2 batteries. I bought that plus six more batteries (to have two full sets) at Walmart for about $50 grand total. No problems with them whatsoever and I've been using them for about 6 months now. Recycling times are much faster than alkaline.

I can heartily second this recommendation. Also available at Comp USA. They are also 1800mah capacity. 420EX flash seems to go forever on nimh rechargeables (have used GP 1600 also). Of course, I have to admit that I also work at Monster Cable.

Just wanted to thank everyone for your input. Went to Walmart and got the Ray-O-Vac 1 hour charger ($29.99) and the 4-pack of Ray-O-Vac 1800 mAh rechargeable batteries ($10). I've been shooting today, testing the recycle times and they range anywhere from 1-2 seconds tops. Big difference compared to the Alkalaine's. I should have done this a long time ago. Again, thanks to everyone.

have a conditioning function??

(I would not buy a NiMH charger that doesn't have this function)

Ni-Mh quick charger even comes with a car adapter to charge them on the go or in the field. I am loving them in my 380ez. I have a 550ex on order so I can't vouch for that. I can say I get super fast refresh rates on the flash and I am more happy now that I am not buying Alkies every week.

I've used the green Sanyo Industrial NImh AA's and AAA's for years. They're hard to beat for power, quality, and price. Find them at RipVan100.com. These batteries are known to be under-rated for power (i.e., they're more powerful than stated), as opposed to most other manufactures who over-rate their NImh's. Try 'em - You'll love 'em...

And pick up a MaHa MH-C204-F charger at Thomas Distributing. Can't go wrong with that choice, either. Cheap, reliable, and relatively inexpensive computerized charging unit. I've been using mine for over 2 years and it's been working 24/7 without fail.
