Tamron is gonna make lenses for the NEX system
June 16, 2010 rumors 2 Comments

According to photorumors.com “First we will see APS-C mirrorless lenses for Sony NEX , Tamron is designing 2 compact zoom and one macro:
  • Compact standard zoom: 24-50mm f/3.5-5.6 VR
  • Compact telezoom: 75-200mm f/4.5-6.3 VR
  • Macro: 90mm f/3.5 VR”
Hope this is ture!!

Bleah ...

I'm guessing 24-50 is supposed to be compact ? The zoom range & speed are both worse than the kit zoom.

At f/5.6, there's barely a low light edge over something like the Samsung TL500.

A 90mm macro ?

So 16mm ultrawide (from Sony) and 90mm bigger-and-slower-than-necessary-because-it's-macro (from Tamron) but still no normal or portrait lens.

I imagine these systems will succeed despite all the best efforts to make them as unappealing as possible !

Edit: Just saw it's an 'SR3' rumor ... which means don't count on anything.

The 24-50 range makes no sense for APSc. And, 70-200? Thats sort of an oddball focal length range.. its not particularly fast either. Now, the 90/3.5VR macro is interesting. ... esp. for video.

the 90mm macro sounds interesting. not too hot on the zooms if that's what they're going to offer... i would have liked a constant aperture zoom.

either way if Tamron is on deck with NEX, it's good news nonetheless.

Why is the 70-200 an oddball?

70-200 is kinda of an awkward focal length with the 1.5 multiplier. It becomes a 105-300 which is a bit too long at the wide end. 300mm at the long end is of course great but then the max aperture isn't that hot.

It is a great lens if you're after an affordable long zoom. But as a 'standard' tele zoom a 50-150 instead would be much better, IMO.

While Sony owns 11% of Tamron, and is the second largest owner of Tamron stock, this does not mean they have much say in the operation of Tamron. Sony can use their shares and try and put someone on the board of the company, this does not mean they will succeed.

It is up to the company's board to name the executives of the company and they in turn set the policies and goals of the company.

Microsoft owns shares in Apple, but you don't see Bill Gates setting policy for Apple.

I see your point but it seems to be very common zoom len, it is not a good walk around len but it should be in everyones camera bag

That is hardly worth bothering with.

Tamron should put out their 18-270 in E-Mount, that would be just about perfect for the target market for the NEX. Though I expect to see a SSM version of that in A-Mount soon.

How about a 30/2 pancake? That's all I want.

First, VR is Nikon's designation; Tamron call theirs VC. So maybe this is just some poorly-informed Nikon (and prospective NEX) user's dream?

Second, getting CD-AF to work would need knowledge of the communication protocol. Do they expect to get that from both Sony and Samsung (the systems the rumour talk about the lenses would be for)?

Third, the rumour only had an SR3 rating.

I don't think we will see any 3rd party lenses for sale until around 2012, when the situation is clearer and Canon and Nikon most likely have played their EVIL cards too.

When lenses come, I hope they will be more interesting than the three mentioned here.
