I have been looking for a while trying to find a bag that will accomodate my "weekend" photo needs, i.e. when I don't want to take EVERYTHING in a rolling backpack, etc.

I have searched and read a bunch of posts, but to no avail thus far.

Here is what I am looking for:

Preferably a belt-pack type of bag, large enough to accomodate:

D60
70-200
16-35
24-70
2x converter
2 batteries & charger
Metz 54 flash
8AA batteries & charger
multiple CF cards
Digital wallet

I am nuts, right? I looked at the Lowepeo 5202, and it doesn't even have enough room for the 70-200 and D60 with 16-35. I am afraid I am going to have to get something bigger, which defeats my original thoughts. Wht if I prioritized equipment a bit more?

In other words, whats the biggest belt-type bag anyone knows of?

Ideas?

Try the Lowepro Stealth reporter 650AW. It's deceptive in size & swallows loads of kit + a laptop. You can buy a Lowepro belt for it if you really want - but the shoudler strap is the best padded strap I've come across in a camera bag. (& it needs to be if you lug a D60, lenses and laptop around!)

The top opening zip is brilliant for grabbing & shooting and then hiding the camera again & if you're shooting outdoors it has two waterproof covers - one that just covers the top flap and another that covers the whole bag...

Pricey....but well worth it.

I bought the Tamrac 759 Backpack. I bought it because it was the only one I could find that would hold my toshiba notebook with a 15" screen. I currently have it filled with my D60, Sigma 70-200 F2.8, Sigma 24-70 2.8, Canon 50mm 1.8, Sigma 70-300 f4-5.6, Sigma 28-300, Canon 420EX Flash, Sekonic 358 meter, and a bunch of filters a remote and misc items in the pouches. It is quite heavy with all this stuff in it, and unfortunately it doesnt have wheels, but I wanted a way to carry everything. I have another lowepro bag that I use when I want to hike around with it.

Try a search on the Bob Krist Bag.
For you, it'd be about the right size, although I find
it a little too large for my needs.

Jamie,
Sorry, I just can't fathom such a belt bag.

I recently went through a similar search. D60, EOS-3, 16-35 L, 28-70 L, 70-200 f2.8 L IS, 550EX, tripod and flash accessories, and wallet with spare BP-511's and flash cards....

I looked at Lowepro, Krist, Tamron, etc. I finally settled on the Tamron Expedition 5. It accommodates all of my gear at one time. Still takes some "manuvering" when packing - which is why I can't fathom a beltpack.

I also purchased a laptap foam case that little more than a foam wrap with (2) velcro closing edges. I can wrap my Dell Dimension Lattitude laptop in it and fit it into the outer pocket of the Expedition . It all works perfectly.

Several of the other backpacks I looked at would accommodate most of this, but not nearly all. The ones with a padded outer pocket had padding built in to cushion a computer... especially the backpacks designed for photo journalists (Stealth, etc). However I found these packs to be way too heavy when empty, meaning there was an additonal two to three lbs to carry around all the time, even when not packing a laptop.

This would also obviously be the case with just photo equipment itself. I hiked the Grand Canyon from top to bottom and back up again this Summer when it was 100 degrees. No laptop. Was still a lot to carr, especially when carrying a good bit of water. Those 2-3 lbs would have done me in.

I have looked at a lot of different bags, including Bob Krist, LP Minitrekker, many waist bags. For me the Street and Field Rover Light is a pretty good overall solution.

1. Designed as a great backpack, comfortable to wear on extended trip. 2. The camera/lenses compartment is at the bottom, putting the weight closer to your body, unlike the Minitrekker which keep the weight further from your back.
2. Great tripod carrying constraption. The best I have seen so far.
3. Pretty well padded.

4. Has a seperate top compartment for jacket, lunch, etc., and side mesh pockets for water and other items.
5. You can add more accessories to the belt if you wish.

I was trying to decide between this and a shoulder bag, so ordered a Bob Krist bag thinking I could kill two birds with on stone. I ended up returning the BK bag because it is not very comfortable as a backpack - it could work as a shoulder bag but I don't think I want to carry that much weight in a shoulder bag.

Hope this help

Thanks Nick, I'll take a look at it.

...is the biggest belt bag. I reviewed it (with pics) in this thread: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1019&message=2947999

I've since reconfigured it a bit. My 1D takes less space than the D2000 did. Changed the body orientation into a corner, and keep a spare battery horizontal, beneath the body, under flip-up dividers. This allowed me to enlarge the lens slots, a bit.

So, at the moment, the bag contains:
1D body and extra battery
100-400L
135/2.0L
85/1.8L
Canon 1.4X
420EX & 2 extra sets of batteries

So, it looks like you would still exceed the Orion AW capacity by:
The diameter of an L lens vs 85/1.8
The length of 2.0X vs 1.4X
The battery chargers
The digital wallet

Yes, I have an idea.

Try a belt system, such as lowepro S&F, Kinesis, CCS. I'd say get a kinesis belt, regardless of what pouches you want to use, as the CCS belt is uncomfortable (my hips will vouch for that) and incompatible with kinesis pouches and the Lowepro belt isn't compatible with kinesis or CCS pouches.

I use mine to carry my EOS 3, 20 F2.8, 24-85, 70-200 F4L, 300 F4L IS, 1.4X TC, Speedlite 430EZ, Nikon Coolpix 700, Lowepro filmdrop.

Best thing about it is that it's never too big and never too small. You can take pouches off or add them on, depending on what you need to carry today.

I'd suggest a CCS holster for the D60+24-70, Lowepro LC1W for the 16-35 (check for fit), Crumpler Tube'o'lager or Kinesis E280 pouch for the 70-200 (if F2.8), or the largest CCS lens pouch if F4 (tight, but it fits), smallest CCS lens pouch for 2X TC, and look into some of the lowepro D-res pouches for the rest of the clobber.

I echo Ivan's suggestion. I (as have many others) went through many bags. My Bob Krist bag is just about the only one I use now. It holds my D-60, 70-200, 100-400, 16-35 and 28-135 (one of which is mounted on the camera body), flash, Digital Album, spare batteries, and lots of little stuff like filters.

I got one of these bags a month or so ago. I like it's size, and the way it's layed out. But, damn, I think it's too big because fully loaded I find it's pretty brutal to carry and find myself wishing for something with a belt and neck strap. Anyway, I can load the thing up with:

D60 with BiG-ED
100-400L
28-70L
17-35L
100 2.8
550EX
Filters, batteries, assorted trinkets

That leaves me ready to shoot almost anything. The only problem is that the 'anything' has to be pretty close to the car! heh.

I think I need something smaller that I can actually get around with.

After years and many bags I've come to the conclusion that there isn't the perfect bag. I keep my camera body and main lenses in a manageable Domke, my acc's in another. I get where I'm going and decide what to take. More often than not I fit one lens to the camera and wear it around my neck, I put on my camera wastcoat and put a lens in each of the two large pockets and fit other small acc's in the other pockets. Not perfect but you can sure move around with your hands free and enjoy a stroll.

Elmo,

I think that is a GREAT looking belt bag.... however reading the message that started this thread I see "70-200mm". Despite being a great belt bag, the bag you reference, along with every other belt bag I have ever seen will not come close to accommodating the equipment that was listed in that original message.

Ah, but in addition to his equipment list, he asked, "...whats the biggest belt-type bag anyone knows of?" Regarding the 70-200/2.8 -- which I now have -- it fits easily in the slot that holds my 100-400L. I know he can't fit all his stuff in this bag. That's why I detailed the items that would exceed capacity.
