Setting up remote

I have a ML-L3 remote
I Can not get in to work with my D5000 Nikon
I have searched the manual.
How do I set the camera up to recognize the remote.

1. Press the info/"i" button to enter the menu
2. Select the shutter mode and press "ok"
3. Press down arrow until the remote icon is selected, then press "OK"

the camera will wait for 1 minute (by default - you can increase this in custom menu) for a signal from the remote. If it doesn't work, check if the remote has a good battery placed correctly (sometimes they are shipped with a protector sheet under the battery which must be removed)
