I recently received my x-drive from Vasa and seem to be having lots of problems with it. Here's the story:

MY PC:
Hewlett Packard Vectra
PIII, 933mhz
256MB Ram
Windows 98SE

WHAT I DID:
Charged the x-drive overnight (8 hours).
Took pictures with Fuji S2 onto a Ridata card.
Backed up the files onto the x-drive.
So far everything seems to work fine.

Ran the X-Drive Setup.exe files from the CD. Did all the appropriate re-booting, etc.
Plugged the USB cable from PC to x-drive.

Then...all hell breaks loose...

I don't have a clear sequence of what happened next, but as I was trying to troubleshoot/reinstall/reconnect/reboot to get it to work I received a variety of error messages:
  • "Error starting Program. The version.DLL file cannot start. Check the file to determine the problem."
  • "H:\ is not accessible. The device is not ready." (This is the drive letter assigned to the x-drive. I can see the X-drive ports in MyComputer, but when I try to open then I get the "H:\ is not accessible" message. And then the PC locks up hard.
  • The strangest thing that happened is that now everytime I reboot, Windows tells me that is has "...updated my CLOCK as a result of Daylight Savings Time. Please verify..blah blah blah." And then it moves my clock one hour ahead. I'm not making this up!
  • Miscellaneous complete lock ups where I have to power down the PC.
  • "System error, cannot read from drive A" (That's not a typo. Drive "A")
I surely hope that this doesn't happen to everyone! I need help or I need to return this thing! Is mine just possessed? I sent this email to Vasa also, but I'd appreciate any other ideas from this forum.

Here's what I did ... maybe u can follow the same sequence...

Format my IBM 40GB HD and partition it 20/20.
Let vendor install HD into X-drive
Set up x-drive software on notebook
Reboot (dun need to, but just in case)
Plug x-drive to notebook, it lights up (some battery power left)
Notebook detects all drives and HD (both partitions)
From then on, it was history and beyond .....

Good luck.

Format my IBM 40GB HD and partition it 20/20.
Let vendor install HD into X-drive
I bought my X-drive with the 20 GB HD already installed. So, we're in sync so far...
Set up x-drive software on notebook
OK, did that. However, the instructions simply said to run setup.exe under Windows. There were TWO different top level folders, each with a "Windows" sub folder and a "setup.exe" file. Didn't know which setup.exe file to run so I did both. Was that my problem?
Reboot (dun need to, but just in case)
Yes. I did this too.
Plug x-drive to notebook, it lights up (some battery power left)
Yes. I plugged it in and it lit up. The "detecting new hardware" message popped up and then the whole PC froze solid. Had to switch it off to reboot.
Notebook detects all drives and HD (both partitions)
MyComputer displayed the various ports (I use "CF") but when I double clicked on it it said "H:/ drive not accessible." Then, of course, proceeded to freeze up my PC so that I had to power it down to reboot (again...).
From then on, it was history and beyond .....

Good luck.
Thanks. Looks like I need it! Any other ideas?

Maybe you installed the wrong driver. I remember seeing 2 different driver folders ... choose the one that relates to your model no. (I'm not near my x-drive or cd now..not sure)... check your manual, model no. is there.

If it still doesn't work, try unplugging all USB or peripherals you have connected.... I'm just wild-guessing if there's any clashes of device detections here.

Lastly, go back to vendor and make him try it on his pc.

It sounds to me that the wrong driver might have been installed, as the CD contains several drivers not only for dfferent Windows, but also for different units.

Considering we are not exactly sure whether that has been done or not, the only solution to this problem is to delete drivers and related hardware installed. Find the device that will show en error (yellow icon in) My Computer, Properties, Manager device.

Once that is uninstalled, we can try to get system back together. CD in and make sure you open the right X-Drive folder, and than set up.

When installed connect X-Drive, and follow the instruction. There is very good explanation in small manual about installation on Win98.

Thanks Vasa,

I'll give that a try. But I must say that the manual could be written better. All it says is to go to the Windows folder and run setup.exe. Well, there are TWO Windows folders each with a setup.exe file.

I'll try it later today and report back!

Josmi,

1) It seems that your x-drive works normally. The only problem is inside your computer or Windows 98 OS and not with your normally functioning X-drive.Check your X-drive with other computer - if the problem is with your X-drive you could return it back.

In case your X-drive is properly functioning you should blame Hewlett-Packard or Windows 98.
2) Check your disk volumes for errors (FAT/FAT32 is famous with that).

3) Check also for viruses using the latest updates.

4) It is not clear that your USB hardware is functioning correctly. Check the USB cables. Also visit Microsoft site and check for USB Troubleshooting, example: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb ;en-us;Q263218
5) Your Windows 98 is a pretty old OS, Windows 2000 or XP is more user friendly.

I had the same type of problem with the X-Drive and I am now returning the item for the second time. I needed a storage device for vacation and after seeing the inexpensive (relatively speaking) price - I ordered the item. Before I left on vacation I spent hours trying to get the X-Drive to function, while trying to figure out and correct all the subsequent computer freezings and errors that happened to my Pentium II - Win 98 system. I finally gave up. I sent it back - the manual is an absolute disgrace -not only is there the most rudimentary information but it was also filled with errors,

Mystic Software finally convinced me that they had solved the problem and it was that the hard drive was not partioned. They said that they had accomplished it and the device was reading fine on their system. I agreed to take it back. I was willing to give the device another try but after this message

and after investing additional numerous hours with this peripheral and trying to clear up all the subsequent computer problems I have had - I am giving up and sending it back.

On the other hand, I had no problem at all, installed easily and works fine (except for corrupting about 1% of the pics)

suggestion: if you do not have Norton's system works, get it. This has a program called "Go Back" which restores your computer to the way it was before you made changes such as installing a new driver or program.

It must be time for my $.02. I tried the X-Drive too. I had a 20 GB hard drive which I partitioned and formated to get a frest start. All went well with hooking it up to both a Win 98SE and XP machines. All drive letters were correct, and I could use the hard drive and the CF reader on either computer. When the X-Drive was on it's own, it would not swap data from the CF to the hard drive. The exact same thing happened with two X-Drives. I finally gave up on that and now have a Super Digibin. It worked on the first try. That's what counts with me.

Well the manufacturer finally responded with a finely crafted form letter to waste more of my time:

Dear Sir,

We apologize for the problems you encountered on X-Drive, and many thanks for your patience on the whole event, I have to discuss with our engineer and will get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you.

Best regards,
Luisa
