I don't want to start yet ANOTHER thread on the D100 firmware upgrade to version 2. But I do want someone to explain this comment I had from Nikon when I e-mailed them about a future D100 firmware upgrade (several weeks ago when I got the camera) What on earth - does THIS mean ??

"This Firmware version 2 is available in the USA. You need to find the
web page for your area and look on it. We cannot guarantee that this
upgrade will work in non-usa cameras."

This is directly from the horses mouth so to speak. What are Nikon saying here ?? That version 2 firmware is only for USA versions of the camera ?? If not - then why on earth say they cannot guarantee it will work on any other version of the D100 ?? I am totally puzzled by this comment. How to completely confuse your customers in one easy step.

Anyone out there - got any guesses ??

What Nikon is saying is that the D100 must be a D100 purchased in the USA with a USA serial number and must be updated with the upgrade made for the D100 USA version/model.

The D100 ships worldwide for different areas and has serial numbers that pertain to a certain geographical area.

If someone bought a D100 in, lets say, China and had it sent to him/her in the USA, NikonUSA will not quarantee or possibly not even upgrade it.

Go to http://www.nikonusa.com for the USA version of the upgrade and read the comments and download and print a return slip.

Hope this helps for those in the USA.

What they means is they cannot guarantee its free of charge.

If your USA D100 is upgrade in Hong Kong, the service centre will charge you HK$350.
free of charge is for D100 purchased in HongKong from authourised dealers.

There are probably language issues involved...

Well, I contact Nikon Belgium, and they stated it was no problem to put version 2 on it.

i went to Nikon UK in London, yesterday, and they upgraded my D100 while I waited. Looking forward to seeing any chnages but as I was satisfied with the camera before I am sure I will be now.

Thanks for all the comments.

I rang Nikon(UK) in London and they were most helpful. I can arrange for the D100 to go back courier and the upgrade be done - free of charge. The time estimate is around a week from me shipping the body - to me getting it back. I still don't know what Nikon (USA) were on about in the e-mail comment !!

Just to confuse us I suppose !!

Hi Zorpie,

Very helpful indeed the little b....... How much is a week without the camera, moneywise, to you? and the courier?

Is the upgrade really necessary to you?

Regards
Raul

I emailed the Norwegian distributor a few days ago, he responded swiftly in a friendly tone that I was very welcome to visit their location (in Oslo), they would then perform the upgrade while waiting. Or, I could send the camera, and they promised to do the upgrade first thing upon receival. My choice. Very customerfriendly!

Yes.

I sent my D100 to the Norwegian distributor (Interfoto) on Tuesday, and got it back on Thursday. Great.

Oh, and BTW, nothing is reset by doing the upgrade. Your settings are retained, and the file number counter is also untouched. Great, since I like to keep track of how many pictures I've taken.

Hi Raul,

Thanks for your comments. The upgrade (in reality) probably means nothing to me as regards the camera's present capabilities - fact is that I am very pleased with it. I suppose I was just unlucky - if I had waited a couple of weeks - I would have probably bought one with version 2.0 off the shelf. I have no immediate plans to send it to Nikon (UK) for the upgrade. Perhaps when Nikon View 3.5 is launched - then version 2.0 of the firmware will come into its own. (But by then the upgrade will no longer be free) But I do believe the inconsistency of TTL flash exposure has been cured - and also the identification of Adobe colourspace when bringing D100 images into Adobe Photoshop has also been fixed in this version 2.0 of the firmware. But for me - you are quite right - these (presently) are very minor issues for which I do not want to loose a 3 week old camera for a week to the importers !! It won't cost me anything business wise to send it away - because I am not a professional photographer. I will probably just stay with version 1.01 for a while yet !!
