After much soul searching and seeking advice from many of you on this forum, I have finally ordered a GRD III from PopFlash. And let me say that they are definitely the people to do business with.

I heeded Harold's advice and went for the kit that included the GV-2 viewfinder. I am old school and to me a camera isn't a camera unless it has a viewfinder. The deal PopFlash is offering was just too good not to be taken up.

I shall spend the next few days consulting Tom Caldwell's famous matrix of box settings on Pavel's Ricoh Forum, which I aim to join in the next day or so. I can only stand back in admiration at the time and effort that went into the project. Thanks, Tom, not only for that but also your boundless enthusiasm for the GRD III.

If anyone else has any useful tips they would care to pass on regarding settings and such, I would be grateful to learn of them. And if anyone can tell me how to post pictures on this forum, I will gladly submit pictures taken with my GRD III.

Thanks must go to the IRS for the tax rebate that gave me the funds to make this purchase and also to the CFO, my wife, for permitting me to spend said funds in such a manner.

Finally, thanks to Joel, Harold and Vladimir for their valuable input in my decision-making process and for embodying the spirit of a real community in this forum.

Calvin.

Congratulations Calvin!

I keep toying with the idea of getting myself the GRD3. Maybe one day soon. It's surely inevitable :)

Enjoy and all the best,

James

Calvin, congrats, you will not be sorry, I am very glad you made this decision. I wish I had gotten that kit, I would have saved a bit of money but that is life as my VF came today. I also got the GC-2 case which Harold recommended, it is beltable, much smaller than the GRDlll case and works perfectly with the VF on it, so if you can call and get that, it is only $27.

You know you know have to post some pictures with it ;)

Joel,

I never knew the GC-2 case even existed until last night. I wish Harold had told me.

Anyway, it seems to be the best for my needs and that's the case I have gone for as well.

If you, Harold and I ever meet up in a bar -- wouldn't that be a blast -- and put our GRD III cameras on the table, we wouldn't be able to tell them apart. :)

I know that you will enjoy it Calvin

It will be a good investment.

Remember that macro can not only be used for close up but at all focal lengths - it is a slower focus method but for what I know no other camera manufacturer has such a versatile macro focus method.

You will also find that this camera is a keeper and will last you for years.

Also note that wide angle does not mean landscapes - it is good for portraits as well - you just get closer and the lens is almost distortion free so close up shots work very well indeed.

At least not until you tried to use one - no two GRDIII's in the world are set up alike (smile)

... must either sell GX and buy GRD III or buy it anyway ! You are a careful and prudent Ricoh advocate and glad you chose to move forward. I cannot imagine a scenario which could challenge your timing and choice.

Enjoy !!!

Calvin, I should have known I would want the VF, you did good, saved a bunch of money and got a great camera....so in NYC we need to find a bar or a coffee shop, and make sure which camera is which ;)

Tom, yes, I think so. Have both, or get the GXR with P10 and a GRD.

Congratulations Calvin.

Do yourself a favour, and accidentally leave the EVF at home one day. Like you, I was very old school, and I also wear glasses. I've found using the brilliant LCD on the GRD III a liberating experience - not too mention that it does allow the camera to be considerably more pocketable.

Will you be living in Florida? Thinking of the Gulf Coast of Florida in two years time, but maybe with this disaster that won't be such a good idea.

Move to Jacksonville, Joel. I could do with a like-minded person to talk to.

Calvin, you will have to educate me. I want a nice town with a village for walking and spending time, not too touristy, not too far from the ocean (or Gulf). I have thought from Naples north, I have relatives in Sarasota and Boca but not going to the east side, too congested for me.
