Challenge 4 - CHAT - Black and White

Hi Pet !
I know you didn't make the rules. No worries. I am not angry at all.

File size is not the problem. Picture is only ~ 78KB (it's greyscale and compressed). To get it down to 600*600 I need to crop 100x100 pixel which would cut into the portrait. I could try to change the resolution. May be it give this a go.

Cheers
Reinhard
I think we're still in the beginning of the challenge, so why
should your picture be killed off... just resize it and repost
under your first post. We all make mistakes!

Petra
Well, too bad for me then. Could not crop it down to 600x600 -
would kill the picture.

Next time another try.

Uhm... I still don't get it... why not just go into Photoshop Image Size and type in 600x600 pixles instead of 800x800 pixles... that would resize the picture. No need to crop! Add a bit of sharpening if needed and resave.

Hi Pet !

Well, you know what ? You are absolutely right. I am so adopted to prints that I never think about resizing. Haven't got PS on this computer but will re-post the pic tomorrow in 600x600 (it's the 3rd time now because my picture hosting side decided to have a disk crash...).

Your theory is definitely sound but the other thing
I'm finding is if I right click and do a save as with IE
on about 15% of the posts I get a Bmp but when
I use Opera with the same link I get a Jpg.

Beats the heck out of me.
I can totally understand you -- the software is still a jungle full of hidden pits and traps, even though things may look standard on surface. I am in software development myself and I am using lots of other programs, so I can tell that we as users can never predict how the software works, unless developer puts a lot of effort and care to make it understandable and user-friendly. Some developers do care, some care less. I know how frustrating it is to run into the latter.

Sid, as for our situation... if it is going to save you any amount of time having it working in IE, please give me examples of those "15% of the posts" where using my suggestion did not give you JPG. I will try to find the reason, and how to make it work. There may be other tricks. :)

Thanks again for your efforts,

Good constructive critisim takes practice to offer as well. So maybe it's not so much that people are reluctant to give serious critism so much as they're not sure IF it's valueable critism.

I like Tangle but I don't love it. I enjoy very much exploring texture in my photographs which is why I spend a lot of time on the macro side of the street (even though my submission this time wasn't macro laughs ).

I enjoy the texture, but to be honest, and maybe it's my monitor calibration (which if true worries me about my post then), I didn't even know there was a woman in there. I think the resolution has something to do with that as well, and the fact that we have to downsize for the competition.

I enjoyed the interesting texture but I would have liked a tad more contrast. But that's just personal preference. I tend to overexpose a lot of my pictures which suits my taste, I like VERY heavy contrsast. No... not kodalith contrast... but true blacks and whites. Which is something I LOVED about "Are you there god" the contrast was very moving to me.

I didn't find tangle moving but I found it interesting and well worth my time! Thank you for shareing it with me and if burried in there is some constructive critisim-YEA! If not, my apologies for wasteing your time.

You know... for a chat thread in a photo competition this is a VERY quiet group. laughs

And I'm wondering if everyone is being nice and not telling me how awful my picture is, or if you're just too busy on other threads.

I would however like to toss my hat in the arena and request critisim, good or bad... constructive or not. I doubt there's anything nasty one could call me that hasn't already been said. laughs

Thank you all, for such a great active group. It has manyfold increased the enjoyment I've found in my 5700 and I look forward to future challenges.

BTW... if nobodoy likes my picture can I claim it's a bias against janitors? Or should I just think that everyone was nicely pointing out that I cannot spell trepidation?

HAHAHHAHAH

Thanks again,

Thanks Elias, originally I thought the posters were somehow
uploading the images that way but seeing as that is not the
case I don't mind using Opera to save the pictures.
No sweat.

Appreciate the offer, and thanks for the nice comments.

is pleasant..

Hahhahaha someone is alive!

Well I'd have to say it's much better to be out shooting than critiquing. Sorry, I don't spell well. I think it's a subconsious resistance to my editor wife's urgings that I improve.

Anyway thanks Sid. I just saw your post on the submissions thread and like it very much. I'm really out of practice with criticism. There also wasn't a lot for me to offer in terms of improvement... well none. I like the contrast, the texture and the subject matter.

As for mine, I enjoy very much trying to take everyday scenes and make people take a second look. I think there are so many intersting images and sights around us that we tend to tune them out.

I can walk around my company's campus or just sit in my office and come up wtih pictures I enjoy looking at quite a while. I love seeing things through a macro view, seeing a perspective that I would never normally take on an object or place or person and storeing the instant for extended contemplation.

Ooo yuck that sounded bad.

I like Haiku... and to me photography is like a hiaku... it's that one captured moment, that one second where you see and share the vision of someone else... just for a split second. And in a split second you can live more than some people do over days.

So, sorry... yes everyone can tease stuipd Josh for being corny. But I do believe it.

Thanks very very much for the feedback. I'll take it to assume that you're not fond of the subject matter. Do you think there's something that could have been done to interest you in the subject matter and it was my composition that was lacking. Or do you more feel that "umm... well Josh I'd never really care to look at traffic cones for an extended period of time".

laughs and grins

I'm glad you understood what I meant. I can fully understand what happend, my brain sometimes does that to me too... stop working completly or is working in a very narrow minded way. :-)

I'm sure everyone would disregard the 800x800 picture if you post the right size before the challenge is over. We all have those days when the brain doesn't work.

Now I'm going to bed and hopefully MY brain will work better tomorrow.

Thanks for bringing it up Joshua, I thought this was "normal" as it's the first time I've entered anything in contest and I haven't paid much attention to this thread till now. I myself don't feel qualified enough to even begin to critique latex paint on the kitchen wall, but in your photo I really like the composition and simplicity of your subject and the textures, although the tall cones being cropped bothers me for some reason and I don't know why. I think my own submission is a bit too contrasty, and I fought with cropping out the window light at the bottom or leaving it but figured it was an intrical part of the moment so I left it, but I'm probably wrong. We are our own worst critics though, aren't we?

I think your composition is WONDERFUL! Your choice for the extreme contrast was an excellent one, in my opinion (which while near worthless is not completely without value-I hope heheheheheh). Anyway I think the composition and positioning of your subject was perfect and without a doubt your choice of title GREALTY enhances the photograph. As I mentioned in another post though, I'm a sucker for deep blacks and white whites... I love that contrast and in my own photos will often over expose or later in photoshop increase the contrast past other people's likeing.

Are you there god is a wonderful picture and if I could offer any feedback it would be that if displaying it you always include the title. Which to me completed the moment.

Thanks for the feedback and thanks for sharing your work,

Josh

Hi Josh, I never thought much about the title but how
does "Water in the Fall" sound. Basically the reason for
the high contrast is because the camera was mounted on
a tripod and the image was exposed for 8 seconds to allow
the moving water time to soften. The picture was also taken
when it was getting to be quite dark to allow for the time
exposure..

Sid
