Dpreview Staff photos!

ehm, almost none of these guys had been a professional photographer, I am kind of surprised; they are what basically the most fellows here on the forums are: passionate amateurs. Prosumers. The only difference being that they are making money from being passionate amateurs. Interesting.

a Canadian happened to get in somehow. It wouldn't be fair to have only one of the three great counties adjoining the USA represented!

Consider the tasks they are doing, why do you think it is necessary?

Are Grand Prix mechanics also top notch F1 drivers? In fact there are plenty of examples of very good soccer managers & coaches who have never been a great soccer player themselves.

Their all so young. No wonder I disagree with their reviews so often. They need an old fogy like me on the staff for a more "mature" perspective.

Obviously the most intelligent of the staff!

Very kind of you to suggest it but Doctors Zich and Westlake took their training rather further than I did.

OTOH I know a couple of guitar techs for rock people whose names you'd possibly recognize. Every one of them can play a jabillion times better than I. Every guitar tech I know is a pretty dandy player. Some folks like the equipment better; some are good technicians but not particularly inventive; some don't like the limelight.

Every bicycle mechanic I ever met was a good rider. Maybe not a gifted athlete, but a good rider.

I believe so, but isn't it true that many good riders are not very good mechanics, especially ladies. :)

Indeed, there are great photographers who don’t earn their living taking photos; there are also professional photographers whose work is just mediocre.

Another point is, the skill sets required doing equipment reviews are somewhat different, if not more technical.

Guitar techs I don't know any but rock people Mark Knopfler and Eric Clapton come to mind. I like those two but also my favourite guitarists (not rock) are Luiz Bonfa, Armik, Bruce BecVar, Al Di Meola. :)

That is also true. Many great riders can't even fix their own flat.
And great photographers who don't know much about how their camera works.

Beyond the sexist reference to the "ladies," which seems more than a bit dated, artists (photographers, composers, etc.) are usually not good at articulating what matters about their art or their equipment. Pros have special needs and there are many of us passionate amateurs on this site.

Finally, Antonio Stradivarius was not a violin virtuoso.

I dunno Phil... I had always envisioned you as a perpetual curmudgeon in his early 60's.
