Hi

After some really good advice on here and the lens forum I have narrowed my decision down to the following options. My budget is a max of £1500 therefore I have to forego telephoto for now

1. 50d with 15-85, and 35 F2 for low light / indoor

2. 50d with sigma 10-20, 35F2, 50F1.8

or as I'm sure I'd want one eventually

3. 7d with 35F2 and save like crazy for other lenses.

Anyone got any fianl advice?

Thanks

John

I have the 7d, I would get that and save like crazy while enjoying the fantastic 7D

7D and 15-85

Most would say 7D because it is new and great. I do not disagree that it is great but I think some may just not need all that camera. I have an Xsi and wanted a backup camera, so figured to go up a bit. Thought about the 7D but thought it was over kill and the 50D at the time was just over half the price. I bought the 50D and love it. It does all I need it too and saved me a lot of cash. Truth is I love having my awesome lenses over having a super body. If you know its just for your own personal use and not business (not that the 50D is not used for business purposes), I say shoot for the 50D

As far as lenses. my fav lens is probably not one you would be interested in but it is the 24-105mm f4L lens. I personally think it to be the best Jack of all trades.

Good wide angle (not great) to fit in some decent landscape, semi telephoto (not great) for when your on the run and need a bit of zoom. F4 for a bit more low light than say 5.6. And IS so you can hold the camera still for some great low light landscape and still object images.

Second for general purpose in my taste would be the 15-85mm.

I say 50D and good lens, what lens is upto you and your shooting style but I would go for the 24-105mm. As a general purpose lens, until being able to get a wider lens for wide angle (which I use the 18-55IS kit, not expensive at all), I would not miss the wide angle beyond 24mm on this lens. I use it 95% of the time.

Darkness is the monster and your shutter is your sword, aperture your shield and iso your armor. Strike fast with your sword and defend well with your shield and hope your armor holds up.

I have both the 50D and the 7D. If money is not an issue I would go with the 7D. It is in a different league than the 50D. The kit wih the 18/135 IS lens is a good starting outfit.

This would not make a good "only" lens. You'll immediately be frustrated by the lack of wide angle -- the 35mm becomes 56mm, kind of what would be "normal" on a 35mm or full frame DSLR.

When I made this choice recently, I went for the 50D and 3 lenses. 17-85 IS F4-5.6, 70-300 IS F4-5.6 and 50 F1.4. I am very happy with this and as I am a returnee to SLR shooting, having spent last 6 years with a Nikon 8700 after my Canon A1 died. The 50 is a great camera and I am rediscovering the joys of photography again. It is having the range of lenses now, that pushed me to the 50D. If you can cope with just 1 lens, then go for the 7D and save. I am doing it the other way round, lenses first then another body. Maybe not as cost effective but having 2 bodies is useful sometimes.

Go with option 1. You're going to be much happier with the 50D and lenses. The 7D is a nice, but over-priced camera.

The body is harder to make suggestions about because the features you feel you need are your own.

With respect t lenses:

1- I would start by getting only one and adding as you go.

2- Out of those mentioned, the 15-85 IS is likely the best quality and most versatile of them all. And the IS will give you quite a bit of options in low light if you are steady.

3- Count on wanting more lenses... no matter how many you eventually buy :)

Cheers.

The 7D is over-priced?? You surely jest.

I'd say exactly the opposite - it has to be one of the best value for money bodies around when you consider it was only one third of the price of the MKIII and MKIV crop bodies.

you seem to know what sort of lenses you want. I am wondering if you have another rebel body and this is some of the lenses you currently have.

There are some nice lenses there, but you may feel you dont like these focal lengths once you actually use them. For example 35mm prime could be a bit restrictive if you only have the 10-20mm.

The canon 17-55mm f/2.8 is a good lens with wide aperture and very good image stabilisation, and may be a good lens to start on, then decide if you want a fast prime for portrait or and ultrawide.

With the first option you have a very nice setup.
50D is more than enough for most and currently sells at a very good price.
Happy shooting!

I went with 50D and 15-85 instead of just 7D (already had 18-55 non-IS, 50 1.8 and 70-300IS). I find the 50D has enough speed and features for my needs but I upgraded from a 300D so it felt like a huge upgrade.
