I am about to purchase a macro lens but what lighting setup would anyone recommend?

My budget (for the flash) is up to £700 (approx).

thanks :)

To get to the same side...

Macro includes quite a few different subjects and environmental conditions:

Indoors or outdoors
Flowers
Insects
Figurines or collectables
Jewelry
Glassware
Coins
Still life

What's the intended purpose of the photos?

Art
Web catalogs or ebay listings
Brochures or printed catalogs
Technical or scientific

The answers to these questions will have a heavy bearing on any recommendations.

You may not need a dedicated macro lens.

Macro lenses give a 1:1 reproduction. Now taking close ups of flowers and similar subjects doesn't actually require that.

You might consider getting extension tubes and/or close-up filter(s) for your existing lenses. These are not only capable of giving you good results, they would also be useful for more specific macro work.

People use all sorts of lighting set-ups. These range from ring-flashes to LED torches and reflectors and all mixes you can name.

I was thinking the r1c1 could be a contender?

I have nothing bad to say about the R1C1 system. I'm just suggesting you are sure in your own mind you need such a sophisticated system.
