Hello, it seems that I get a lot of people from all over asking lots about a fashion shoot, many want to assist, and while I would like to have them there to learn it is and has been a problem in the past, sometimes they are in the way, sometimes it is just too crowded, sometimes it is a little uncomfortable to the model to have someone staring at them.

But this is a little different, I am doing a Fashion photography show at Brittany Spears new NY restaurant/Club NYLA on November 2nd, (your all invited info is below) and I am doing a number of shoots leading up to this event, one at NYLA itself (probably 4-5 models) another will most likely be at the fulton street bath house/spa. The NYLA event will be short and abbreviated but I have the opportunity to bring one to two people to help out and watch, hopefully learn something, and so I am going to do just that. This is not a paid assignment and while its not going to be a demanding job you will be there to semi help with lights and reflectors or a video camera, you can certainly ask questions but at the shoot it must be semi reasonable due to our time restraints but I am open to answering your questions after the shoot at some point either later that day or on another day so if I do not have time to fully explain things during the shoot be assured I want to explain it (thats kind of the point of this) so I will explain it and if all goes well it will actually be explained at the shoot because my shoots tend to be a relaxed and fun experience. I am going to bring probably two quasi assistants one can help out moving lights etc and one to do a sort of makeshift behind the scenes video, not real important just something to have and get a few clips from for use later in promotions or such, and maybe depending the two can switch from one job to another if they want.

Now before any photographers jump on me about destroying the financial structure of the business of photography, I want to point out that I have several paid assistants two are coming, (sorry its not that I don't trust the potential "interns" but I want to get things done for me the club and the models coming) as are several make up artists/stylists, and a few paid assistants I am leaving at the studio in lew of these quasi assistants. As this is a short shoot and limited in budget I am not in need of that many assistants really and feel that this can be an opportunity for someone to learn or gain some experience on a shoot, and this is basically a self promotional shoot for me and the models NYLA will get promotional shots from it but they are getting me to do a show there which is there stake in this so I do not have to answer to anyone for the budget or assistants that are present. Believe me bringing a free assistant to a paid job gets the response "if you can get a free assistant why are you bringing paid ones and charging for there services? why not get a few more free ones and charge us less?" These are questions I do not want to hear or get into on paid assignments.

So what are the qualifications for an assistant? Plenty but I am willing to settle for someone that has some digital knowledge of digital SLR's or SLR's in general, maybe someone that knows basically how to work a video camera (consumer grade DV cam) hopefully is capable of moving lights and lights stands, holding a reflector if needed, and plugging something into a wall outlet. Must be able to walk up stairs (Its a two floor club) and must be able to be on time and not scare the models with stalker like stares while thinking about lighting ideas (believe me I have done it and seen it enough, your blankly staring at a model thinking about the lighting or next setup and all they see is a blank stare right through them, makes them wonder alittle what your looking at?) Oh yea you must be in NY and available when we are shooting, I already know that we are shooting at NYLA (41st between park and Madison) on Oct 17th at 8-8:30 am - 11:30 They open for lunch so we shoot early not my ideal time but thats when it is set for.

So if you think this fits you drop me an email and we will start sorting through the responses. [email protected]

guess colorado is a little far to drive then?!?

Actually just wanted to say that it is pretty cool that you'll give a few people that opportunity. I know I would love the experience, since my main exposure is weddings and portraits.... its a shame for me but I am sure someone will be delighted to have the experience... also great photos.... I can tell you have been doing this a little while

Heather

Just kidding Stephen, South Beach is a little too far away. I did want to thank you for doing that test with Inga while she was in the City, she had nothing but nice things to say about working with you.

I think that anyone who has the opportunity to work with Stephen will take away from the experience quite a bit of useful information. I have followed Stephen's progression from the D30 through the D60 to the 1D with rapt interest.

What a great opportunity for someone to learn about fashion photography and I won't have a chance to be there.

This is a really cool thing that you are doing. Any chance of doing this again? I would love to help out and learn a few things from a pro at the same time.

Thanks.

Stephen, I would love to be your assistant, but on Nov 2 I will be out of town ;(... I will be back on the 5th. I live in Brooklyn. If you have similar assignments for November after 5th, please email me...

Thanks,

it and seen it enough, your blankly staring at a model thinking
about the lighting or next setup and all they see is a blank stare
right through them, makes them wonder alittle what your looking
at?) Oh yea you must be in NY and available when we are shooting, I
already know that we are shooting at NYLA (41st between park and
Madison) on Oct 17th at 8-8:30 am - 11:30 They open for lunch so
we shoot early not my ideal time but thats when it is set for.

So if you think this fits you drop me an email and we will start
sorting through the responses. [email protected]

If not feel free to come by on NOV 2nd and see the show and hang
out at the club click here for more details

model below will be at NYLA

Hello, it seems that I get a lot of people from all over asking
lots about a fashion shoot, many want to assist, and while I would
like to have them there to learn it is and has been a problem in
the past, sometimes they are in the way, sometimes it is just too
crowded, sometimes it is a little uncomfortable to the model to
have someone staring at them.

But this is a little different, I am doing a Fashion photography
show at Brittany Spears new NY restaurant/Club NYLA on November
2nd, (your all invited info is below) and I am doing a number of
shoots leading up to this event, one at NYLA itself (probably 4-5
models) another will most likely be at the fulton street bath
house/spa. The NYLA event will be short and abbreviated but I have
the opportunity to bring one to two people to help out and watch,
hopefully learn something, and so I am going to do just that. This
is not a paid assignment and while its not going to be a demanding
job you will be there to semi help with lights and reflectors or a
video camera, you can certainly ask questions but at the shoot it
must be semi reasonable due to our time restraints but I am open to
answering your questions after the shoot at some point either later
that day or on another day so if I do not have time to fully
explain things during the shoot be assured I want to explain it
(thats kind of the point of this) so I will explain it and if all
goes well it will actually be explained at the shoot because my
shoots tend to be a relaxed and fun experience. I am going to
bring probably two quasi assistants one can help out moving lights
etc and one to do a sort of makeshift behind the scenes video, not
real important just something to have and get a few clips from for
use later in promotions or such, and maybe depending the two can
switch from one job to another if they want.

Now before any photographers jump on me about destroying the
financial structure of the business of photography, I want to point
out that I have several paid assistants two are coming, (sorry its
not that I don't trust the potential "interns" but I want to get
things done for me the club and the models coming) as are several
make up artists/stylists, and a few paid assistants I am leaving at
the studio in lew of these quasi assistants. As this is a short
shoot and limited in budget I am not in need of that many
assistants really and feel that this can be an opportunity for
someone to learn or gain some experience on a shoot, and this is
basically a self promotional shoot for me and the models NYLA will
get promotional shots from it but they are getting me to do a show
there which is there stake in this so I do not have to answer to
anyone for the budget or assistants that are present. Believe me
bringing a free assistant to a paid job gets the response "if you
can get a free assistant why are you bringing paid ones and
charging for there services? why not get a few more free ones and
charge us less?" These are questions I do not want to hear or get
into on paid assignments.

So what are the qualifications for an assistant? Plenty but I am
willing to settle for someone that has some digital knowledge of
digital SLR's or SLR's in general, maybe someone that knows
basically how to work a video camera (consumer grade DV cam)
hopefully is capable of moving lights and lights stands, holding a
reflector if needed, and plugging something into a wall outlet.
Must be able to walk up stairs (Its a two floor club) and must be
able to be on time and not scare the models with stalker like
stares while thinking about lighting ideas (believe me I have done

I am replying slowly but surely, You should get an email over the next few days. Since this is only open for two people that leaves alot of you who responded out and I am sorry, perhaps if this is something that some of you are interested in I can do this a few times a month or so and see if I can't get a few more of you some insight into fashion location shoots. Let me know if anyone would be interested in that possibility.

All the shots below are totally inaccurate color, I need an assistant just to custom white balance for me LOL Maybe I'll read the manual one of these days and finally get it right.
