Hello JimmyDee,

Very nice pictures.
Some (like the sea gull) look a bit oversharpened.
May I suggest to experiment with the sharpness setting.
Put the camera sharpening off.

When you see them at first on your monitor they don't look good, but when you add some sharpening afterwards in pp, the picture lookes imo better than when you use the camera sharpening.
The picture looks sharp but also more smooth, like below.

Have fun,

Zoooom

Have fun,
how to put camera sharpening OFF in HS10?
do you mean set to "LOW" ?

Jimmy,

the flowers are very beautiful!

But somethings wrong with the ducks, imho. I gues you might try what Dave suggests and indeed not sharpen too much?

It's something i must be aware of myself.

Guy.

beautiful outing. the HS10 allow you to zoom in as well as get in close.

Hope to see more

thanks for sharing.

Suggestions well taken, will keep trying.

The setting was either P or Scene Auto. yes, the camera sharpness was set on Highest. There was a feeding frenzy, so the ducks were constantly moving. However, flowers were more 'cooperative'. The day in Toronto was beautiful. 99% of the the time, I had no focus problem whatsoever. I went with Lloydy's advice and set the camera on spot meter and centre focus on P for zoom pictures - In auto, you have no such control. ISO was Auto 800. Since it was a sunny day, camera mostly selected ISO 100 or 200 itself.
Do I like this camera - dah.

Hello didyou,

I have the HS 10 with the firmware update 1.01.
I'm dutch so I use the dutch menu.
In dutch one has three options to set the sharpness: hard, standaard and uit.
In english this means: hard, standard and off.
So if you select the third one the sharpness must be off.
Hope this will help.

Regards,

Zoooom

That's not correct. In the german menu you have the options: Hoch, standard and niedrig, which means in english: High, standard and low. So you have no possibility to stop sharpening 100%.

Nice pictures, but I also see an oversharping in some.

Kind regards
Klaus

You got some nice ones in there...most of my Daffodils bloomed earlier so they are out of sync with the Rhodies. I appreciate that these are sharp. The backlit Daffodil is wonderful. If there was clear water around the birds like the Seagull on the rock and the two Canada Geese, maybe a wider shot with the clean fore and background of water would be even more pleasing to the eye. I have no idea what obstructions, etc., may have been lurking outside the frame...good stuff.

Thanks everybody.

Very nice series, Jimmy...!

Yes, a little less sharpening (are you sharpening any after in PP...? ) It's easiest to see when you look at the background and you can see blotchy little dots like a course grain effect... Kind of looks like noise would look if you were using a high ISO but you're only using ISO 100 and 200 so there shouldn't be any noise...

But don't take it badly, your images are great and we all (at least talking for myself) sometimes over sharpen... All part of the learning experience... ;)

Keep up the good work and post more...! :)

Agreed. I am still experimenting with PP. I like STOIK Imagic for it's automatic Balance and Contrast controls, but do not understand it's sharpening settings ('horizontal, vertical, strength'). For that, I find Faststone approach better.

I realized that one can not use same amount of sharpening for each picture. For instance, flowers could handle more sharpening then ducks. I also messed up some of the ducks trying to fix the highlights and color washout from glare, doing my own rookie way. One of the beauties of digital camera is - just format your memory card and do all over again. Like Lloydy said in one of his threads - 'This camera is going back' to the same location on next sunny day. Thanks for your kind words. :)

such good weather! it's still cold where i am brrr....

i never get tired of looking at dandelion shots. glad you included one in this series.

cheers

Jimmy

I see Lloydy was the first to comment and tell you how to get the highlights under control that was good advice. While most or all had blown highlights the shot below came out really well due to overexposure. The blown area's are small and you might be able to fix that by cloning in some detail from another shot. If you are interested in seeing how that might be done post this shot in the retouching forum and have them take a crack at it.

This shot has a good comp and the rocks are interesting
