Several reviews indicated a very short battery life. Would like to hear from owners about their experience in this area

... I am only using alkalines, not rechargeables.

These are Panasonic eVolta's and I am easily getting 500+ images per set. This includes using the LCD a lot.

The low battery warning usually comes on when I still have about 100 images I can shoot, before failure.

I'm over 3,500 images total now and still have the seventh set in the camera.

Cheers.

And the general consensus seems to be, in this forum at least, that the HS10 has a problem with its low battery indicator. This manifests itself in the warning (single red bar - not flashing) coming on waaaayyyyyyyy too early, even if you have the battery type set corectly. However, the camera then seems to soldier on for sometimes several hundred shots before it gives up entirely.

This has been reported to Fuji.

Some users have reported problems with focus and other issues when the batteries get low....

Me, I find it very inconvenient that the only warning you get that the batteries have reached critical, is when the camera shuts down. But then I always have a spare set with me. And virtually any shops sells AA's :)

Roy,

I have only taken approx 2000 pictures, but here's what I got (very little flash use):

Original supplied alkalines - approx 300
Energizer Lithium Ultras - approx 1200
New Pearstone 2900 MAH (discharged/charged 3x) - 480 and still going
(note - battery warning came on at approx 80 shots)
New eneloops ready to ge next.

I'm happy with the battery usage, and the camera!

After some initial "misfires" with batteries which I will chalk up to an old set of rechargeables that had just been recharged too many times, I've had great experience with the battery issue. I'm using Eneloops and after charging them I'm getting well over 500 (probably over 700 the last time) shots BEFORE the red light (not the flashing one) comes on.

Appreciate the input-appears that battery life is "normal" but indicator needs some work.
You'e got it in one. We are all hanging on Fuji and 1.02...... or should that be 2.0 :)
I agree it is the battery indicator at fault.

I'm not convinced it can be fixed by firmware though - could be a hardware fault we have to 'work around.'

Ran my HS10 for over 2 hours at school show the other night. 300+ photos, 6 videos totalling 20+min. NO low battery indicator until after I'd uploaded them all at home. Using Good-to-go 2100maH batts (7dayshop ENELOOP copies).

You think battery life is better with these that are rechardable batteries or these that you buy and throw them later ? I dought it makes no differents what brand you buy... maybe alkaline rechardable batteries are better then others... dunno.

Just got back from the granddaughter's recital with a new set of 3000mAh NiM batteries.

At first try using them, the battery low light came on, but continued to work until I was in the middle of HD Video recording. That was all yesterday. Today, after discharging the batteries completely, using the camera's discharge mode, I recharged them last night and used them during today's dance competition. A lot of HD Video recording without any indication of a low light.

Just use the most expensive batteries.. perhaps good thing to get the rechardable if you want.. Its not like your batteries wil die in 2 days even if you had the thing on turn on for 2 hours for 2 days.. :) batteries do have life till the end.

I'm using NiMh rechargeables 2700mah. I took 388 pics on Saturday and 10 short videos. The camera was switched on and using the LCD screen for 3.5 hours continuosly during that time. No battery warning light yet.

The general consensus is that Sanyo Eneloop batteries work very well - these are Ni-Mh type re-chargeable batteries. The advantage of the Eneloop is that it retains its charge over a long period of time - I think it retains about 90% of full charge even if the battery is not used for 6 months and around 85% if not used for 1 year. There is a new version of the Eneloop from Sanyo that retains 75% of full charge even if the batteries remain unused for 3 years and they can be re-charged up to 1500 times!

Take a look here:-

try this one I'm more than happy but be aware they do work long lol

soetimes camera can play up when they go down so always good to have a spare set ready (3-4hr depending settings)

Thanks for your advice and link but these batterie brands ive never heard before and im base in australia. And i would never buy such thing like batteries off the ebay website. So i will not buy batteries from ebay. But i do preciate your helpfull tip there.

I think it is more smart thinking to buy rechargable batteries and you can buy them from just Kmart with good ones and comes with the small charger device im sure..

But yes i dont no how much the HS10 will suck up the batteries up. i will have to let you know the negative side of that much later when i buy the camera and test things out aventualy.

Alkaine i think its good compare to durracelll as ive just heard on the tv commercial.

WTF!
OMG
"Energizer Lithium Ultras - approx 1200" is THAT correct!

Yes, correct. I was waiting for them to die so I could start testing the rechargables, but they kept going & going! Of course those batteries are normally $10/set. I did have all sounds off, and high speed shooting was also off at that time. I was really being quite conservative on power use during most of the time on those batteries, but I gradually have been changing settings. I just killed my first set of rechargables (Pearstone 2900MAH) at 685 shots, and now have a set of new eneloops in.

For comparison: I have an S9500 and have Eneloops for day-to-day use. However, if I'm spending a long time away from the mains I always take sets of Energizer Ultimate Lithiums. They normally last about 700 shots a set.

Yes, they are expensive but they also:
  • have a high energy capacity (> 4000mWh)
  • are very light (14.5g each)
  • continue working at extremely low temps (-60C)
  • can supply a large current (2A continuous)
  • have a very long shelf life (15 years)

They are sometimes available on special offer in supermarkets so I just stock up when they are cheap.
