*** Post your Macro Shots - Alien Safari ****

Thanks! I will see if I can do it tomorrow. I've worked on getting the best results with no-cost items like plastic bags and pieces of paper that seem to work well.

I use a pocket bouncer with the head forward, light is reflected down. Over the bouncer and flash is a plastic milky white bag, the end of the bag is drawn down along the side of the lens for some light from below the subject. A piece of paper sticking out 1cm from the bottom of the lens reflects some more light up on the shaded side of the subject to even out the dynamics.

Insects often are very very shiny so a large area diffuser (in relation to the bug) is a necessity to prevent blown highlights and the harsh look.

dude, whao, those are awesome!!
Thanks man!
So what's this metz deal you speak of?
It's a high-end-ish flash, guide number 58, only with the secondary flash turned on. I used a 430ex too sometimes but I thought I take the advantage of the extra power the metz offers. Shooting at 200 iso f/18 (little diffraction is visible) no light except hard direct sunlight would have an impact on the image. I use relatively slow shutter speeds for the background or hold a leaf behind the subject to prevent it from becoming black.

Yep, my wrists are sore after an afternoon shooting with one hand, and the ballet shoot today wasn't helping either ;)
And you have a Canon 50mm 1.8 on the camera with a Nikon 50mm backwards on the end of that?
Yes sir, that's it, simple and cheap :)
Wow, those are awesome, love all those dew drops on everything, how cool!
I'll tell you another secret: I used an old au de cologne spray filled with cooled boiled water (some bugs may have a problem with calcium in the water). When sprayed from a sufficient distance they stay put (at 10-15 degrees C moving isn't really an option for them anyway, being cold blooded).

Don't use a plant spray, those tend to spray very large drops comparable with 5L buckets of water at 100km/hour for a human. They'll scramble for cover!

OH cool, that is awesome!

Thanks for the tips, very very cool. wow so the water is to keep them calm... wow cool idea! I was thinking of smoking them like bee keepers do lol

I just held my 50mm 1.8 backwards in front of my kit lets at 55, it looked like it worked, about to check the photos now, thanks for all the tips, ideas and cool photos!

Just looked at my shot at this, wow like shooting down a paper towel tube lol
do you get that too with those lenses mounted like that?

The DOF is like slightly shallow too lol I tried F10 in Av mode.. still super shallow wow.

Now I really appreciate your shots even more, I'm trying to hold steady the flower is going whoa whoa in and out of focus lol
I think you really are a Q!

Here are the best two just holding the lens. Pretty bad but I'm getting the idea how you do this :)

Little flower about the size of a corn kernel.

some weird mosquito thing on a blossom

wow that is amazing!
You realize.. I'm going to have nightmares tonight because of that lol

Great job!
Shot using 40D + grip + metz AF-1 58 + 50mm + 50mm (front to front) 1:1.
Terrific stuff. Not just close images but interesting and beautiful.

Have you seen the weekly macro threads in the Canon SLR Lens Talk group?

Here's a recent one from me. This guy's head is about 2mm wide.

Wow, that is a great shot. Would make a great "B movie" monster.
Thanks a bunch. Yeah, I love the way the reflection of the lens in his eyes looks like irises.

Wow, that's an awesome shot Wilba, the best one I've seen of a jumping spider.
Thanks a lot. :-)
I have one at 2.77x magnification but yours must've been 10x or something :) Good work and thanks for the compliments!
It's a crop of something like 55% of the width of the original shot at around 4.5:1, so yeah, about 8-ish.
Yes, I've seen it and I've posted in it too a couple of years ago. Maybe I'll share these there as well. Thanks for the heads up.
They'd certainly appreciate seeing your work.

Try stopping down the reversed lens. I tested my setup yesterday and found I got the best results with the EF-S 55-250 (at 250) at f/8 and the reversed Pentax 50/1.7 at f/9.5.

That's pretty dim so you need bright light to be able to focus even with exposure simulation, and you need flash for the shot.

Hi WillbaW, how did you set the Pentax to f/9.5 ? will it work with the Canon 50mm f1.8 ?

Here's what I used. The piece of paper is already on the lens, a bit banged up from use. The items are:
  • 40D+grip
  • 50mm f/1.8 II
  • Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 MF lens stuck to the canon 50mm front to front
  • Piece of paper to reflect up some light under the subject, otherwise it'll be totally black
  • Lumiquest pocket bouncer (not a necessity but it's convenient)
  • Plastic bag coming with a Chinese delivery diner :)

Pocket bouncer mounted on the flash which is in turn mounted on the camera:

This is what the business end looks like (what your potential alien will see coming at it that is, I wonder what it would look like with faceted eyes, a few dozen clouds perhaps?).

You can see how I've wrapped one end of the bag around the lens and taped it down. That will enhance lighting:

Side view:

Close up of the lenses, you can clearly see how the lenses are taped together. I've focused so that both lenses extend the most and get plenty of area to stick some tape on it. It's pretty solid. Even if the nikkor should fall off it doesn't really matter, it's a cheap lens and it's much better build than the plastic canon.

The Nikkor is set to wide open, otherwise it'll vignette a lot more. I have an EF-S focusing screen that allows a better representation of the DOF to be seen through the viewfinder. I can pinpoint exactly where the DOF will be.

Some test shots, full frame downsized. The vignetting isn't really that objectionable to me:

dumb question.. how do you stop down a reversed lens when it has no aperture ring and it's not attached to the camera?

I had the mounted lens set to F18 like IMQ said to do
