Capture One 5 vs Lightroom 2/3

PS CS5 has approx 70 sliders for adjusting values. No sledge hammer needed. Or simply select Auto and use the defaults. Ugg. You see, your choice of software is often determined by what you have learned, or choose to learn.

I do know that ACR, as used in Elements, is an abbreviated form. Perhaps the Lightroom version is also? I don't know.

as ACR but does not require the presence of ACR on your computer.

yet since I still have CS4.

So far, at least, the ACR and Lightroom raw tools are the same. If that were not the case you could not transfer an image from Lightroom to Photoshop as a 'smart object' and have the Lightroom RAW adjustments be 'make sense' to PS.

Sorry for the wishy-washy response :)

Yes Robert,

previews are included. Other browser apps I use (Photo Mechanic, Acdsee) do not need such large databases and are as fast as LR, or even faster.

M
It's highly unlikely you catalog reached the quoted size. I'll bet what you are seeing is the size of the previews file ( .lrdata).

A bit late, but I thought I should quickly illustrate what I mean, the original, converted without any corrections in LR3 BETA, the second one converted in Capture One and the third one converted in LR 3 BETA. I spent most time in LR3 to see whether I could copy the blues of the night sky in LR. I found it more difficult to get the blues back and used true curves and levels in Capture One, but only the "mock" curves in Lightroom 3.

I noticed that Capture One has a generic camera profile built in to "connect" I guess to the specific camera type. In LR3 there is a profile section but has only rudimentary effect.

OK here goes:

Deedsnet,

the key word here is "will have" this feature will be in the Final v3 shipping version.
Adobe has already made it official ... on there Adobe LR blog.

There have been many threads on the LR beta adobe forum. (mostly wineing, why it's not there, and why it cannot be there in RAW lol)

Well, contrary to all the reasons why it could not be done ... it looks like Adobe is doing it.

It will be the same as PS5 ... or so they say. :)

imho, it "could" be better ... being that it will be "over" the RAW file in LR ... and can be Auto Detected as well , just like Iso/Camera settings is now.

hope this helps,
HG
I am using LR3 beta and it has lens correction but only a very coarse tool, not as sophisticated as PS5 with lens profiles being auto detected e.g. ZEISS 21MM with its quircky mid range "wobble" being automatically corrected in PS5, in LR, from what I can see there is only a lens correction tool letting you pincushion in or out ...
fyi: LRv3 will have PS5 Lens correction.

many PROs are slowly making the move to LR

and I personally like it. for me the workflow is fast.

I don't need it be the best at everthing ... I just need it to have the plug-in support of the best. and I think that's going to happen.

deednets,

without looking at the DNG/raw file ... my guess is LR any flavor ... could create the same look with a WB tweak and a HSL pre-set to bump/adj the blues/apua

once you have that HSL pre-set ... you "could" just apply it on import or apply it with one click to only select images.

It just will come down to how comfortable you are with each of the programs.

For me the flow of LR is better ... and the added control feature list is growing. (that can be auto added on import)

Played for 10 min or so with LR and found I could NOT get the same blues out of the original. I have used LR 2 for the last 2 years and like the workflow too, APART!!!!! from the need to "import" photos into the same location????

I sometimes take a couple of photos to advertise on the internet, ebay stuff, you know?? In LR I can't just open the silly files, but have to import them first ... A silly and I guess very small thing but somewhat annoying.

The workflow in Capture One is as easy, but I can now see all my folders, external hard drives, no need to "import" then lose them again ..

But nevertheless liked LR!

I tried to replicate the kelvin settings from Capture to LR and that didn*t work the gliders have completely different results and you cannot go by percentage.

I like the TRUE levels in Capture, that is you "fix" a point, if you are not familiar with this, then "fix" another point in your histogram and then "bend" the light of the surrounding pixels without touching the "fixed" ones ... this get very gentle rolloff from the background to, say, the sky, if you use masking in LR or PS ...

I will keep using both programms, but probably more often use Capture One ...

Thanks for your reply!

Thanks for that! I have used LR3 Beta version 2, this one doesn't have the lens correction built in!

Will keep using LR and upgrade to the final version if there is a compelling enough reason. Otherwise I might just stick with LR2 and Capture One ...

Given that you have been using LR 2 for 2 years, then you already know why you must import each image: Lightroom uses a database to keep track of images and changes.

I doubt that any 2 NEF converters will arrive at the same temperature/tint settings for a given file. All those converters have their own recipes to generating a viewable image.

I know that LR uses a database, but would still find it useful, IF you could just open a file, NOT!!!!!! import it into any database and just convert it as a temporary thing ... as delightful as the photo of a wireless mouse my 12 year old wants to sell on ebay (NZ equivalent: TradeMe) might be, I would have loved to just use this once, then forget .. True ... but in my efforts to "mimic" the other converter; I went through same slider settings and got ridiculously different results! I kind of expected that, becaue the algorithms are different, but wanted to replicate the results. Interesting playing field though!

Thanks!

I really liked LR2 for its good workflow and hated it for it's poor rendering of Nikon files and the delay in displaying a preview.

Bridge is instant, so why not LR.

I liked the quality of conversion from Capture One, but not the workflow.

LR3b2 now has superb image quality, nearly that of NX2 and a great workflow, but still feels slow to review images in comparison to bridge.

If there was a fast rating system that didn't rely on creating XMP files and was compatible with LR ratings, I think my search would be over, but as it stands each solution seems to create it's own problem.

deednets,
you can "Auto" import , Quickly for Fast review and import ...
This was a "tips & Tricks" way back when LR was beta ... pre v1.

It "was" (now we have a export choice to group with the original folder with the DNG) also a way to ... Export a JPG and have it make a round trip into LR.

Auto import "was" the Fastest way to Import images you used with "Other" tether software.
  • forgot the LINK for the tip ... but, here is the general idea:
1) Create a SEPARATE ... AUTO Import IN (Watched Folder) , AND a AUTO Import OUT Folder ( LR Folder that is IMPORTED , and you can see in LR )
  • fyi: I put these two folders on my separate DATA drive ... along with my LR Library files ( I like to have it on a separate drive ... so when I do my ANNUAL re-format HD and re-install the OS thing ... the DATA is all separate , and I don't have to look for it.
2) ALL you now need to do is have LR "watch" this "AUTO Import IN" folder ... and import anything that is there (you can also have pre-sets or no pre-sets apply to it)

3) Now set the "AUTO Import OUT" folder as the Output folder

4) Now with a JPG in the AUTO Import OUT folder ... Just import this ONE(1) file ... and you will have "this" Folder on your imported Folders LIST ...
  • TIP: try to name or Organize the way you do this Folder so it FALLS at the END of your LR FOLDERS LIST ... you will thank me latter. :)
Now, from now on ... ANYTHING that you drop into the Watched folder ... Automatically gets imported ... and magically appears into this folder that is already LISTED in LR.

Now , you can Quickly Edit it in LR (File) ... OR more importantly ... MOVE it to another LR folder if nessasary.

fyi: .... almost Everything, that is not from my shoots on a CF ... I import into LR this way.
I only need to drag the files into my watched folder ...
Then I deal with the File management ... within LR.
  • I have even created a "Shortcut" on my desktop of this folder .. so you can can just drag and drop files there to import into LR !
but, don't get me started with the somewhat weak File management in LR ... but, with each version ... it is getting better. (and does more types of files)

and I am even talking better accross a Network.

Thank you,
HG

WOW, now that is a detailed response! Thansk so much for the explanation regarding the auto.import. Sounds to me like a wee workable workaround??

Have been using Capture One exclusively over hte last 4 weeks, where of course there is no such issue!

Pros & cons with all software, the usual story, but for ME Capture One is years ahead of the competition in terms of natural conversion. Just my opinion!

lol, yep ...

Remember this is a OLD workaround that has been used since the beginning of the LR beta pre v1.

But, once you have it set up ... it just works. and works for all kinds of stuff.

Say even downloads of JPGs from the web.

Just make that your destination ... and then bang ... it is automantically in LR.
AND, you know where to find it. :)

Once you, start importing this way ... there is all kinds of things people used to do with it.
