It's been a while when I've done any bug macros. Today I've dusted off my Canon 50mm f/1.8 and Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 and went out. I've returned with hundreds of shots with many species of bugs.

It was a great alien safari, lots of legs and antennae :) I'll post mine in the next post.

Please share yours!

Do you mean 50mm macro lens?

If you can really do macro with the 50mm f/1.8 lens I really want to know how if you don't mind.

Those are some stunning images. I love them all. I have got to get a proper macro lens. Thanks for sharing these.

Shot using 40D + grip + metz AF-1 58 + 50mm + 50mm (front to front) 1:1.
Terrific stuff. Not just close images but interesting and beautiful.

Have you seen the weekly macro threads in the Canon SLR Lens Talk group?

Here's a recent one from me. This guy's head is about 2mm wide.

these are fantastic !! and you got all of those in one outing? I guess, I should expect no less from you. but damn, these are AMAZING! I have a 35/2 and a 85/1.8, can I do anything with it macro-wise? or can you point me to a link where I can find out some more about front-to-front lens macro shooting? thanks! :D

Great shots!

You have very nice diffused light in these shots, what does your flash setup look like?

I see it now ....
You use a macro coupler.

Thank you MrWisker, no I used two cheap 50mm f/1.8 lenses with the canon one mounted, the nikkor one with the front toward the front of the other lens, so you're basically shooting with the wrong end of the second lens. I'll post a picture of the setup later. I've now 2000+ shots to trawl through from a ballet studio shoot 8-S.

Thanks a lot technophile! You don't have to, you can use a couple of 50mm primes or other combinations like 30mm + 85mm for 2.77x magnification. Extention tubes is a possibility too of course. Working distance is short though, about 1" or 2.5cm.

Wow, that's an awesome shot Wilba, the best one I've seen of a jumping spider. I have one at 2.77x magnification but yours must've been 10x or something :) Good work and thanks for the compliments!

Yes, I've seen it and I've posted in it too a couple of years ago. Maybe I'll share these there as well. Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks much Bakez, I use a 30mm f/1.4 mounted + 85mm f/1.8 front-to-front for 2.77 magnification. It does work but there's a lot of CA that's hard to correct. You can try your combo by holding it up with your hand and see if the image circle is large enough. You can try sticky tape first and get a reverse ring later. Have fun!
