This is the absolute worst ergonomics I've ever experienced in a digital camera: With the battery door in the way, there just isn't anywhere near enough room to get your fingers onto the SD card, in order to pull it out and either replace it, or download images from it.

I swear, I have wound up using my fingernails to pry the dang thing out, and darn near EVERY SINGLE TIME, the card has gone flying into the air, and onto the floor. I really, really don't like to do that with my precious SD cards, know what I mean?

So, has anyone figured out some sort of a trick to get your fingers on that card? Must I attach a pair of tweezers to the dang camera so that I can reliably take the dang SD card out of the dang thing every dang time I try to dang dang dang dang dang.....

Gaaaaah!!

Anyway, if you have any advice, I'd sure like to hear it. I'm tired of flipping my cards onto the floor.

Thanks!

I don't have the epl1, but if I'm right this might be embarrassing for you... LOL

On the EP1 and 2 if you just PUSH on the SD card there is a little click and a spring loaded mechanism that pops the card out. I imagine its the same on the epl1. Try it.

Hope it helps...

Hi Tom

I don't have an Olympus camera but all the SD using cameras I have used have a spring loaded SD card, you don't have to pull it out. Just press down on the card and it pops up - I thought it was standard?

Yeah, you're not supposed to pry it out. Just push the card and it will pop out. It's standard for almost every camera. :)

Oh, of course I'm pushing down and clicking the thing so it pops up. No problem there at all.

It's just that, once you get it to pop up, you can't get your finger and thumb on the front and the back of the card -- there's not enough room between the card and the opened door "behind it" to get a finger or a thumb in there. So, you try to get it out by holding onto the "sides," which doesn't work, and then you resort to prying the thing out with your fingernail, and all of a sudden it gives, and goes flying into the air. It's like you need to cut half of your finger off, "on edge," so it'll be skinny enough to get on the back side of the card.

It's the door design that's the problem. My wife's Ricoh CX2 is very similar and there's not enough room between the door and the card to get a finger nicely in place to grab a hold on it. The 'press to pop up' doesn't pop it up far enough.

I offer no solution except to have an 8 year old nearby with small fingers. Naturally keep the 8 year old handy for programming the video recorder.

This guy didnt buy his first camera yesterday....
True.
he's a Sony fanboy come a' trolling.
Not. I'm pretty brand-agnostic these days. I've got an E-PL1, and there just plain isn't enough room between the popped-up SD card and the opened battery/card bay door to get your fingers on the thing enough so that you can pull it out of the slot.

I truly wonder if someone hasn't come up with some way to fit their fingers in there enough to be able to actually pull the card out of there.

Absolutely. Geez, it's frustrating!

Well, I am truly probably going to get a pair of tweezers with some grippy, rubberish ends to use when I get home and pull the card out to download the images from the thing, but I really worry about swapping cards "out in the field" -- it's one thing to drop the dang card onto the floor every time I try to take it out here at the house, but I sure don't want to do that out on the street!

Easy. Click card, and take it out by holding in by the sides. Works 100% for me.

Hmmm. It's really "too tight" to get enough of a grip on the sides.

Though, I've been trying to "push it down farther, so it'll spring up a bit more," and that has helped quite a bit. If it'll pop up just a wee bit higher, then I can get enough grip on the sides/edges to pull it out of the slot.

And hopefully, perhaps over time, maybe the slot will loosen up a bit. Maybe I'll give it a shot of WD-40. :-)

Tom,

I must say this is humorous. I've had the EPL1 for a couple of months and have never run into this issue. Push in, pops up, pick it up. Perhaps the thumb and forefinger have been eating too many Twinkies. :-)

Admittedly, now that you mention it, I notice the door is a bit too close. But really hasn't been a problem.

Nah -- the goo from the Twinkies would probably help get a better grip on the card. :-)

Have you been grabbing the card on the sides/edges? I guess that's really the only way to reasonably go about it....

Fat Finger syndrome spottet ;)

What´s that noise?

From one of the Canon Forums:

'I just came back from my first holiday with the 5D II (I think my wife was there as well). '

I know just what you mean! I have largish woman's hands and find it snug in that spot as well. You might ask a wife or someone else in the household with smaller hands to help? Not sure, but this surely was poor planning on the part of Oly!! It does spring up when pushed as someone else suggests, but not enough to make it easy to remove....not for me anyway!

I have an 8 MB card which holds over 1000 images, so it's not an issue often enough to cause major head-aches, but I can understand your dilemma! And I still can grasp the card with my fingers and pull it out when needed. Hope someone has some good ideas that don't require the assistance of another person! :-)

It's not the most convenient location for sure. Another trick you can try is pulling your finger away quickly. I found if you push down and move your finger away quickly it comes out much further and is easier to take out.

The card slot is spring loaded. Once the card goes in you should be able to press the card once and the card should pop out for you to grab. If it does not the spring is broken or the mechanism used to pop the card and if it is new you need to return the camera. Either way it needs to be fixed.

When getting anything new all functions should be tested while under the stores return policy. It may be covered under warrantee but that takes time to send the camera away.

But then I noticed that there's a groove along the top of the card. Just stick your nail into the groove and pull the card out.

Jeff.
