Please make the links to other sites more accessible. I used to use dpreview as a portal to things photography. Now I can't. It's easier just to go directly the the sites to which I used to link.

You have heard of the concept of a web site portal?

We're not a search index / portal. Those links were old and outdated (hadn't been updated for several years) hence depreciated.

Phil,

Even if you are not a portal, do you not want me to visit your site on the way to photo.net, or fotki? I should think this would be beneficial to dpreview.com.

Yes, back in the late '90s. Found little (or to be precise, zero) use for them since the advent of decent search engines (aka Google).

And having a handfull of links hardly made dpreview a portal of much use to anybody.

You're quite the internet wiz I guess. Wow, I wish I were as knowledgeable as you. Your smart-ass answer is not the slightest bit helpful.
It was designed to be about as helpful as your original post.

This subject has been brought up several times in the last few days and, as far as I'm aware, the search function is still working.

I merely offered you a one line solution to your problem, rather than repeating a lot of hot air that is already on here.

If you want to use this site productively, then you will whether the links exist or not. If you don't want to, then use a bookmark.

Why should this site provide free advertising?

No. It was designed to be sarcastic. It was a written rolling of your eyes. Your point about productivity is simplistic and shows a lack of creative thought about the internet. Can I use the new site "productively?" Yes. In fact, I rather like the design. Could I, and many others use it more productively if the links were accessible? Yes. Does it hurt the photography community if dpreview.com "advertises" other photo sites? Not from my perspective. Let's hear your argument to the contrary.

You may be too clouded by you outrage that a low capability user like myself had the gall to offer a criticism of the site to see any merit in my post. However, I offered it, really a suggestion, via the "post a comment" link on the news item about the site redesign, right after the following sentence, "We'll be introducing new widgets and new functionality to the right hand column over the next few months, and your feedback on this - and the rest of the redesign - is welcomed."

So, why don't you try to contain your petty floccinaucinihilipilification, and keep your posts to offering kind, helpful advice.

I'm not in the slightest bit outraged by your volume of useage, and more to the point you have been a member far longer that I and therefore have a greater right to comment; if you rate things in that way of course!! :)

I was being sardonic rather than sarcastic, but my point still stands in that it was intended to match the usefullness of your comment. What I didn't take into account was that you had replied to the News Page item, so apologies are in order.

There have been a huge number of direct posts complaining about the upgrade in various forms, mostly by people that just cannot cope with change. It's mildly ironic that people complain about the site being modernised, when the whole raison d'etre of it is to report on the latest cutting edge photographic technology!

As for whether advertising would hurt the photographic community or not, it's a fairly simple answer. DPR is a commercial site supported by advertising revenue and owned by Amazon. You don't find commercial television stations advertising their rivals unless they have been paid to do so. The reality comes down to cold hard cash, but then we benefit from that by getting a great resource for free. It would be lovely if all photographic sites were interlinked and shared resources, but this isn't Utopia.

As a side issue this has brought up a point that also has been mentioned before when a News item generates multiple comments. Maybe all responses from that page should be routed into one comment thread to save confusion and avoid the forum being flooded with one post threads. That is meant is a constructive rather than negative view btw!

One man's sarcasm is another's sardonicism.

The problem with your analogy is, that a web site is not a TV channel, viewer interactions with it are much more complex. I presume that advertising volume and rates are correlated to page viewership and page views. So by ensuring that dpreview is people's first photography destination, even if they are bound for imaging-resource, this site gets more views, and possibly more ad revenue.

Finally, I don't like using huge numbers of bookmarks. I end up with long lists through which I must scroll or search. Further, If I use dpreview as a portal, I can scan it prior to moving on. There are many ways to skin a cat, some prefer one, others prefer another. I enjoyed clicking dpreview on my link bar, scanning it a bit then navigating to the dpreview menu of other sites and surfing to them to see what else is new in the world of photography. Now I can't do that as easily so I'm disappointed by this aspect of the redesign. I thought it would be pretty easy to re-enable that activity since the links page is still part of this site, and since those links still lead to active websites.
