Hi all. I have a G10 as my back up to my DSLRs. I generally like the images coming out of the camera, but I would like something a bit smaller that will easily fit into my pocket. I am moving to the desert and I prefer (during the summer) to have a camera I can easily transport on my person without worrying about leaving it in the car etc. How would you compare the S90 with the image quality of the G10? I realize that it 14 vs 10 megapixels, but if I get a nice clean, sharp, well exposed image, I will be very happy. Also, before I plunk down almost $400, how are the newer Canon models that go wide to 24mm? Do those cameras have comparable image quality to the S90 and G10? Thanks to all.

It's just as good and better in low light. I've had them both and I know.

the s90 will give you far better image quality than that of the g10.

My second camera (My workhorse is my Nikon D300) was the Canon G10. For the same reason as you state, it's too big and bulky to take everywhere (Though the images are great). I got the PowerShot SD780 and it is super small, and I've been totaly amazed at the photos I've gotten from it.

Also back in 2003 or so I had the S50, I liked it so much I got the S70 (My friends fought over who would buy my S50!) as soon as it came out. It was a fantastic camera. Anyway, I'm feeling from the review of the S90 that is could just be the perfect blend between the S70 I had, and the G10. Smaller but with more features, I'd love to try one out.

Also in the review of the S90 they are all upset about where to grip the camera. With the SD780 there is no place to hold it and I've never had a problem. You just hold it like a pack of cards on the top and bottom, always use the wrist strap just in case. I've never even almost dropped it, yet. So that is a non issue for me. My SD780 has a tiny viewfinder that is worthless. People that use these cameras look at the LCD screen. So the S90 not having a veiwfinder is also more of a plus than a problem.

G10 is slightly better at base iso if you print large or crop a lot.

S90 is clearly ahead at higher iso, however Max shutter speed is more limited and it has no built in ND filter, and no ovf, can it matter to you in bright desert light? Also not easy to attach polarizing filter.and also no external flash capability.
I lové my s90 though and do not miss my g10.

Well I had a G6 as a back-up for my DSLR but the S90 has proved a much better companion.

I love the S90 and it is with me always. The size makes it possible. The image quality is really good and you have lots of control. Shooting RAW and processing in Lightroom is terrific. I keep a photo diary and the S90 has been key.

By the way, a great add to the S90 that makes it much easier to hold confidently is the Richard Franiec S90 Grip. It works great. And looks great too.

I'm a working pro shooter and between my 5D mkII and the S90, those are the only two I need... bases covered.... Love the S90!!! Same chip and digic IV color processor.... nuff said!

The S90 has a Sony chip where as the 5D mk II has a Canon chip.

Same processor agreed.
Hopefully my S90 arrives Monday

I bought the S90. I like it. Do I love it? no. I have to say that it is well built, convenient, easy to use with reasonably good IQ. However, I am an old film guy. My first 35mm camera was a Ricoh rangefinder that my Dad gave me when he bought his first SLR, a Topcon about 50+ years ago. Frankly, I am a bit spoiled by the images coming out of my 24meg FF DSLR. I also love the feel and handling of my G10 which is a bit of a retro cam. I just love shooting with it. The S90 certainly has a place in my camera gear. It will certainly spend a lot of time in my pocket this summer and on those occasions when I am with my wife who feels that unless you are at the zoo or with the grandkids, carrying a large cam is embarrassing and makes you look like a tourist. I do no recall who said that the best camera is the one you are carrying.
When the S90 is in my pocket, it is my best camera.
