Only a few weeks, with my Zr1...and there is dust on my CCD sensor!!!

I thought it was dust inside the lens...but it's clean.

How would you like to have this spot on every image you take !

not me......so had to do something about it.

After few cups of coffee...was ready for the challenge :)

Already tired, from sanding and painting my folks front door,to their house, last night after work. (not the best way,to celebrate your birthday, mind you) :(

First, take off all outside screws, with very small philips head screwdriver

Then, take off shield. If you can't get it off, that's because of this tab here:

Ribbon cables, seem too easy to break, and I was afraid,i wouldn't put them back right,so I left them on

Camera will now look like this:

Now remove 3 screws,to reveal CCD sensor:

Here's CCD exposed, with dust on it,causing the spot,on every image:

Here's a closer look:

I used blower (just air,not air in a can) to remove the dust spot,as well as a few more, that joined in,while dissasembling.

After sure there is no more dust...

Repeat steps, but in reverse...and hope surgery was successful.

After a few test shots,both full wide angle,and full tele photo,of a white wall,surgery was a success!!
(Thanks God !)

My ZR1 is now spot free!!

Congrats on the successful surgery Doc. But for goodness sake stop chewing on your fingernails. :) Kidding.

Congratulations! Excellent job and thank you for the step-by-step explanation. You are a very brave man. A little late but HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

Can we assume that the re-assembly process went on without incident or note worthy cautions?

Never put off until tomorrow. . .
that which you can avoid doing altogether.

Any guy who sands and paints their parent's front door on their BIRTHDAY is alright in my book!!!!!! Happy belated birthday....and you gave yourself a wonderful gift of a clean sensor without costing you any money. Good job!!!!

I am totally impressed with your surgical skills, Anayv. Do you do out-of-warranty repairs? If so, I'll keep you in mind in case I have problems with my FZ or LX! ;-)
Good job!

Thanks,Clancyboy!

I don't know if I'm brave...or part crazy,lol

Years ago, a Canon S70 died on me (E18 lens malfunction)

I took it apart...and chickened out, trying to get to the lens assembly.....that camera ,is still in pieces :(

Well....it is back together,and works,as new.......but i did loose a screw :(

I need to find it,as I don't think it was an extra one ,lol

Many thanks for that posting! I just noticed today that I have dust on the sensor of my ZR1 (two large flecks, and a small hair which showed up after I tried a puffer on the outer lens element), and it's a big help to know that it's possible for normal people to disassemble and reassemble one of these.

So was I ! :)

Tried years ago,to fix a dead Canon S70...couldn't even take enough parts off,to get to the lens assy, and couldn't even put it back together .
Do you do out-of-warranty repairs?
Haha.....yes..but only if camera is already broken...this way...I figure,if it's broke ,I can't break it,lol
If so, I'll keep you in mind in case I have problems with my FZ or LX! ;-)
i hope you never do need any fixing
Good job!
Thanks,Daniel!

Thanks again for the pictures! I disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled my ZR1, and it's now dust-free once more. The dust wouldn't come off just with a blower, so I used a bit of Bounty to wipe it carefully, and all went well.

Dust specks and hair before -- they were visible even in normal photos, and particularly distracting on videos:

Dust after: (ignore the WB difference, the sun had changed position by the time I'd finished cleaning..)

The annoying thing is that the camera lives in a camera pouch except when it's being used, so I'm obviously going to have to do this sort of cleaning on multiple occasions as time passes. Ah well, at least I know it's possible.

Keep the camera in a plastic sandwich bag, and very likely the problem won't happen again. It really is dudtproof - & dust clings to the bag preferrentially by static electricity.

In my experience, the zipper bags aren't neccessary: simply a loose fitting plastic bag in my pocket. All day, every day.

I had a camera ruined by pocket lint some yreas ago and now have used the plastic bag in pocket for several yraes with my TZs - and NO dust, and no wear marks on the cameras, either.

My sister's camera lives in a pouch in her purse, and there is lint packed in the corners.

The plastic bag does not look elegant - just works. ;)

Your welcome.

Good job,fixing your ZR1 !

I didn't have mine long,before dust came in...not a good sign :(

Build quality is better,on the ZS3,IMHO. (but love the size/weight of the ZR1)

I since bought a snug Panasonic camera case ...for really cheap ($4.99).

Erik has a fail safe solution...and much cheaper than my cheap case, lol
