I went to an F1 testing session at Silverstone last week. It was an excellent opportunity to take photographs. Entry is free, the place is more or less deserted, and you can go where you like (well, not inside the fencing, and some grandstands are shut). I managed to find several good shooting spots which would be out of the question on a race weekend.

The only downside is that there can be a lot of waiting between runs. It was worth it though, seeing Sato go through Maggots (a 190mph left-right turn) is something I'll never forget...........

How do you find out when these are on? Silverstone isn't far from me.

They're on http://www.octagonmotorsports.com/ usually on the right hand panel.

It's well worth a visit. I'd seen F1 cars doing demo runs at Goodwood, but seeing them on a track was awesome. I've been an F1 fan for 20 years, but never been to a race because of the hassle, seeing them in action has persuaded me to go to the qualifying next year.

Hi

New to photography with the Canon D60. Can you please explain what sort of settings I would need to take images of fast moving objects? What is pre focus and AI servo?

Pre focus is used when you know wher the subject will be moving to, and focus the camera on that spot beforehand. For example, at a racetrack you'd focus on a spot the cars drove over every lap.

AI-Servo mode continuously focuses on the subject, and tries to predict it's position. It works best when something is travelling directly towards or away from you at a constant speed.

Thanks. I borrowed a friend's Nikon D1X and a 180mm over the last weekend to take some go-karting photos. I've never used a top end camera and I found the autofocus of D1X to be very fast.

I've sold my F90N but I don't want to spend so much on a D1X or Canon D1 so am now considering a D60... just wondering how much worse off would I be after having experienced the D1X.

Great photos!! Love them!!

Did u all use any pre-focus or did u use the AI-servo to track the
cars?
