This is a forum right? .... I think the ads are bigger than the text

hmmm i think we all saw this coming . . . the complaints that is. You know? I am not a fan of the ads either but I am a fan of this site and the content that it provides for free, so i put up with the ads. In the past I've raised issues of too much flash sucking up bandwidth and slowing the site but those bugs seem to have been worked out.

So dpreview I wish you success and hope the redesign improves your ad revenue.

Sorry, where did I say that?
I did not claim you said it, I said you implied it. You applauded a post (I hope you agree with this characterisation) which declared that the width [of the actual content part] had not changed. Which is true, the physical width is unchanged but the perceived width has shrunk (and in terms of layout, the perceived width is what counts, layout is about perception).

This just give the impression that in your opinion nothing has changed (in terms of relative weights). Maybe your intention was just to highlight that despite maybe debatable changes, the actual width had not changed. But belittling perceived impressions, one opens oneself to criticism.

Ah perception.. Silly me.

I use a common computer wth 1980x1280 pixels and the rigth/left margin on DPreview is almost same size as the content field.

It would be nice if the content field automatically resized to use the available width of the screen, please.

Ah someone worked it out, you get a gold star.
Do I detect that someone is getting royally p* ed off with all the negative attitude to the so-called "improvements"? Your own attitude leaves a great deal to be desired, evidenced by your own reply, above.

Good. The new dpreview is truly awful, and royally deserves AdBlock, which I think was probably expressly designed for this site.

Yeah, that is a pity, all that work on the new site layout and only realising after it's done that perception should have been factor in the design. That's really tough luck.

That would be heaven ... I have two huge bars of empty space on either side with a massive banner and a tiny content forum box. It does not make much sense.

...paid for with money I get from people who want to advertise beside the words and pictures I create.

Considering the quality of the site -- and I spend far too much time here -- and the price you charge me to visit, I think people should be thanking the advertisers.

That's your perception. I think it's fine. People will adapt. People are threatened by change and that is the bulk of what we are seeing here - happens every time a website undergoes a change.

Do you know why newspapers print stories in columns 2" wide? instead of running the paragraphs the full width of the paper?

Well, it's been there since the beginning of this site, so at least some things never change. That's too bad.

I have to agree with the other "complainers" about the relative size of the ads. This site has now become very confusing and even annoying to use. Hopefully things get better over time. It just takes some humbleness and respect for the users (even if they're not paying). Not sure if it's there, though.

Do you know what HTML originally marked up content rather than layout?

Actually it's not "my site".
But maybe you can forward some ideas to people, deciding about content?

I've explicit proposal: stop animating your own content . You can present different challenge image or featured article on each page visit (click), this way all your content is (becames) visible, but not in distracting way. Currently you create strange precedent - site visitors start blocking not only ads, but even your content. (You not in sense on "Phll Askey", but in sense of entire dPreview site.)

Of course I'd suggest stop displaying animated ads too, but this is not in your powers. Or is?

This new change IS worse for ads then before. This is like being stuck in a traffic jam on a freeway and looking at 10 billboards that flip every 5 seconds. Man I don't think I really need to come here and look at it anymore. There has to more to life then being bombarded with ads that I really don't need. Shame, I guess all good things come to an end.

Someone posted about it in this thread...THANK YOU!

Wow..what a difference! :)

(by the way, the new layout is cool, and easy enough to navigate...)
