One of my favorite types of photographs.... one I have yet myself to master, are night shots. Shay's infamous (infamous to me :-) night shot of the Seattle skyline (please correct me if I'm wrong on my memory) is one of those images I am just in awe of.

However, toinght I learned of another photographer who's night shots make my jaw drop. I don't know who this person is (personally) but he's a master of the "night shot" for sure !!

Take a look and tell me what YOU think of these.... especially the Brooklyn Bridge shot, a shot that has been taken a gazillion times during the day, rarely seen as a masterpiece like this....

The Cokin T1 filter he uses is a tobacco graduated filter. I wonder if you can smoke it...hehe

Hey Zip,

I have blue, grey, and tobacco grad filters. I haven't used the tobacco one yet, but I've unsuccessfully used the grey and blue ones several times! lol They really are a little tricky, and only work well under certain circumstances.

Here is probably my best result from the grey one. It's not great, but I wanted to maintain some exposure on the far side of the pond so I used the graduated filter so I could expose a little longer without overexposing the sky.

I bought the Cokin kit and a couple of Hitech grad ND filters. I haven't found a use for them yet :(

Mark,

A graduated filter comes in many different colors - tobacco is just a reference to the color. Look at Zip's post, the filter shown is a graduated filter. The term graduated means that it starts dark and then gradually gets lighter and is pretty much clear about half-way down. To really use them effectively you need a filter mount and then get a square (size A I think) filter so you can slide it up and down in the mount, depending on where you what area you don't want to overexpose.

Help?

Tabacco is just the color tone ...

You know how you can buy some sun glasses that is tinted with different shades, going from very dark to lighter at the bottom of the glass? Thats graduated ...

Here are some more samples that should give you an idea ... http://www.centuryoptics.com/products/filters/grads/index.htm

thats cool....i really dont have a lot of experience in those graduated filters. Ive seen them but never thought id use them for anything.
Im wondering if the same effect can be done in PS?

Thanks for the answer..... I happen to own a filter mount adapter and filters but, have not used them since I last touched my Canon EOS SLR... over two years ago I think ? lol

The term tabacco escaped me for a moment.... then returned as soon as I hit the "post" button. Doesn't it always return AFTER you post ? :-)

Now....I have about a dozen different Tokina filters, a lens mount and, no idea if I can mount it to the front of my F707, because I never bothered to try.... since they now are in semi retirement wtih my Canon SLR. Oh.... retirement means the closet. LOL

I think the filter mount is a 49 or 50 mm thread mount.... just right for some great vin. masked images. LOL Is there a filter mount for the F707's 58 mm thread ????

TIA for the reply.

your guess is good as mine. Thats why i had to look it up. I was expecting to see a UV filter made by some smoke-a-holic with yellowed tobacco fingers. hehe

I have some filter knowledge too but not when it comes to these graduated filters. Im always meaning to look into them but always seem to forget. Theres another photographer on PhotoSig that uses grad filters a lot too (Darwin Wiggett). Youve must have seen his work

LOL

Like I said... it came to me / dawned on me after I clicked the post button that tabacco was the color.

So far I think three or four people have now asnswered my hasty question regarding the term tabacco.......

So, it's ok guys!! I got it. Thanks for the help.

Now, since you are all in such a giving mood.... how 'bout a donation....

towards my next digicam purchase!! LOL Really..... the money would be going to a good cause.... cause I really want it . LOL

Hope I made you smile a little tonight ? :-)

This other guy's shots are excellent, which confirms something I've been noticing lately. The better night shots are really twilight shots. The graduated filters give more of an illusion of nighttime. By comparison, Shay's night shots are just that, making it more challenging to get good exposure.

BTW, I'm curious what the image would have looked like without the warming filter. What's a good site to see the effect of warming filters?

If you look at this photo of his:
http://www3.photosig.com/viewphoto.php?id=161997

He didn't like someone's critque of his photo. He got friends to gang up on Andrew Van Beek and I'm sure the same happened to the other 2 members. They basically took almost all of his points away. I experienced this same problem after 2 days I joined Photosig. I got so upset that I did the same back to the other member. The admin wants me only to reverse what I did. I told him no and he can delete my account instead of waiting for the deadline.
