I've renting an S2 pro but they're out of > 300mm lenses, so I'll have to buy one. It's a good buy since I'll be able to use it with Kodak 14n rentals later also. Would prefer to spend around $500 for a zoom lens. VR is a plus too. But is VR really needed for handheld sports shooting? So far the best bet looks like the 80-400mm VR but the cheapest i could find it is $1300.

Hi Andrew,

The 80-200 f2,8 and 300mm f4 are also very good and sharp lenses for using with the S2, some friends of me bought second hand lenses and they are very happy with it, try maybe to find a second hand lens (in shops or the net).

With very kind regards,

Yet the same rental store actually has a used prime 300mm F4 for $600. I'm not sure if I can shoot clear pics at 450mm or 900mm with a 2X convertor without a tripod or VR, though. What do you think?
Also I prefer a zoom lense over a prime for greater flexibility.

Hi Andrew,

At 900mm (2X teleconverter), you need to shoot at least 1/1000sec handheld and f8. That is a lot of light you do not have outside in a shadow .. You will need a tripod for sure.

Regarding the camera shake point of view ..

Adding a 2X to a lens means :
  • You lose 2 fstop, meaning you get a shutter speed 4 time slower.
  • doubling the focal length is like getting a shutter speed 2 time slower.
  • It is like having to shoot 8 time faster to get the same image freeze (4 x 2 = 8).
Adding a 1.4X to a lens means :
  • You lose 1 fstop, meaning you get a shutter speed 2 time slower.
  • Increasing the focal length by 1.4 is like getting a shutter speed 1.4 time slower.
  • It is like having to shoot 2.8 time faster to get the same image freeze (2 x 1.4 = 2.8).
Maybe a 1.4 teleconverter could do the job.

David

I;m not sure if it's proper but i included the 1.5 Focal length multiplier to arrive at the 900mm. Just a 300mm lens a 2X extended and the multiplier. Do you still think it would be best to go with a 1.4X extender? What about w/ VR? The 80-400 VR lens would then me 1200mm.

  • That is the way to do. The resulting Focal Length is 900mm.

  • Yes
What about w/ VR? The 80-400 VR lens would then me 1200mm.
  • The 80-400 is a f4.5-5.6. Pretty dark. This means no AutoFocus with the 2X and a lot of focus hunting with the 1.4. I would say 2X upto f2.8 and 1.4X upto f4.
The Sigma teleconverter are very good by the way.

Try it before you buy to make sure it does what you expect.

Can't you select a higher ISO to compensate? I know that will add some noise but for me that would be well worth it. What do you think the highest fstop is for shooting handheld at say 400mm 100 ISO on a sunny day? F5.6?

Hi Andrew,

The 300 is a razorsharp lens and very intersting at that price. For clear pics with that lens you need high shutter speeds or a tripod or a monopod can also help for a big part, I never shot at 900mm but I think that then you certainly need a tripod, I also prefer zoom lenses for the greater flexibility so maybe the 80-400 VR will be the solution but the sharpness is less then from the 300mm or the 80-200mm.

I have heard using the converter on the 80mm-400mm in other threads and the the recommendation is that the sharpness is greatly affected (effected?) and if converters are to be used, that they only be used on prime lenses.
