I don't see a category for the Rebel, so here I go. I'm sure the powers will move this thread if need be.

I have a Rebel XTi and have a dickens of a time with auto focus in low light. I am shooting in low light, but not THAT low. I tried it ISO 400, in a daylight forest, diffused light. My point-n-shoots have no problem in this light level. Of course, I can switch it to manual and get the shot. This has been an issue for me for some time.

Is this common with DSLR cameras?

Yes, It happens with every DSLR camera. This is happening when you have low light outside.
I also have the XTi (also known as 400D) and the 17-85 Canon lens. I have never had a problem focusing in moderately low light. I tried just now with ISO 400 in an environment dark enough to require a 1 second shutter speed -- no problem. Try using center point focus only and see if it improves.
